Vista SP2 Beta Available Thursday

Vista SP2 Beta Available Thursday

If you want to try out Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Vista, you’re in luck. From Thursday it will be available to everyone, Microsoft has announced.

A select group has had the code since October, and MSDN and TechNet members can already get it, Vnunet reports, but the company now feels it’s stable enough for more people to try. However, to obtain it you’ll need to join Microsoft’s Customer Preview Program (CPP).

Be warned, though, that the beta isn’t for everyone. In a blog posting, Mike Nash, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for Windows Product Management, noted:

Windows 7 Will Be Called…Windows 7

As a company, Microsoft may not put much stock in numerology, but it could be hoping that a little bit of luck might ride along with this decision. In a first for the company, they’ve decided to make the codename for an upcoming operating system its real name when the product goes to market. Gone are the days of OS names like Windows Millennium Edition, Windows XP, and high-concept names like Windows Vista. No: the forthcoming WIndows 7 will be officially known as “Windows 7″—and will be the first time Windows has been named for its version number since the bad old days of Windows NT 4.0.

Vista-Capable Labels May Have Misled Buyers

Vista-Capable Labels May Have Misled Buyers

Microsoft may have known that computers branded “Windows Vista Capable” were inadequate for its operating system, according to new evidence unveiled in a lawsuit against the company. The class action suit was filed a year ago in Washington by customers to who felt Microsoft’s label was misleading. According to SeattlePI, the plaintiff’s lawyers used internal Microsoft e-mails at a hearing on Friday to show that Microsoft employees knew there was an issue.

Vista SP1 Officially Heads Down the Pipe

Vista SP1 Officially Heads Down the Pipe

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer confirmed rumors of an impending Vista SP1 release on Monday by announcing that it had officially released to manufacturing, meaning physical copies of the update are being burned to discs and shipped to computer manufacturers. Ballmer broke the news at a “Microsoft Strategic Update” for investors on Monday morning.

While the release to manufacturing stage is already in progress, actual availability of the software for most users still sits over a month away. On the official Windows Vista blog, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Windows product management, Mike Nash, announced that SP1 would go live to customers through Microsoft’s download center in mid-March. In a separate announcement, the company noted that Microsoft Volume Licensing customers would be able to purchase the updated version of Windows Vista on March 1.

Windows XP Refuses to Die

Windows XP Refuses to Die

It’s rare that a company has to forcefully kill off a product that continue to sell, but that’s exactly what Microsoft has planned to do with Windows XP in order to spur sales of its newer Windows Vista operating system. The trouble is, not everyone’s happy about it: Consumer feedback has prompted Microsoft to stay XP’s date of execution for five months.

With the release of Vista, Microsoft originally stated that Windows XP would continue to sit on store shelves and appear in new computers until January 30, 2008. With that date quickly approaching, the company announced yesterday that the new date would be June 30, 2008, due to clear feedback from “customers who needed a bit more time.”
