Yes, It’s Everywhere: Now, Tweets From Space

Yes, It

In space, perhaps, no one can hear you Twitter. But on earth, a Tweet from space can have plenty of followers.

NASA astronaut Mike Massimino certainly does – 273,676 of them, in fact – and they follow all his Tweets from space under the name Astro Mike. He’s been sending them since April, transmitted through a radio link from his current home in the space shuttle Atlantis to the Johnson Space Center in Houston, according to Vnunet.

NASA has plans to expand its Twitter use, and Mark Polansky, captain of the next shuttle mission, has already signed up for the service as Astro_127.

Pimp Your Superbowl XLII Party

The Pats versus Big Blue, plus Tom Petty at the half: The Super Bowl just doesn’t get any better. Of course, what’s the point of watching the game on mediocre gear when you could be showing off a hot new home theater rig (and a few geektastic extras) to your buddies as they guzzle all your beer?

Full Moon Fever

This trust-fund-busting setup will make you feel like you and your friends are sitting on the 50-yard line — minus the drunken idiot spilling beer on you (or not).

Vonage CEO Michael Snyder Resigns

Michael Snyder has resigned as CEO of troubled VoIP operator Vonage, effective immediately. The company also announced a series of cost-cutting measures designed to improve the company’s bottom line: the company will cut advertising by about $110 million, and will make an unspecified number of job cuts to lower general and administrative expenses.

Snyder will be replaced on an interim basis by Jeffrey Citron, who was Vonage’s chairman and CEO from January 2001 through February 2006. The company will launch an immediate search for a new CEO to replace Snyder. Citron said in a statement: "Mike has made valuable contributions to the growth of our business and we will miss him. We thank him and wish him well in his future endeavors." Vonage offered no explicit reason for Snyder’s resignation.

DVDs rentals outstrip VHS tapes

Earlier this month, for the first time ever, consumers rented more DVDs than VHS cassettes, according to the Video Software Dealers Association, a nonprofit entertainment trade association.

According to the association, consumers rented 28.2 million DVDs compared to 27.3 million VHS cassettes during the week ended June 15.

It is the latest milestone for the digital video disk (DVD) video format, which was first introduced six years ago. According to the association’s figures, DVD year-to-date rental revenue surpassed VHS rental revenue for the first time in May.

Sean Bersell, a spokesman for the association, said several factors caused the format’s popularity in the rental stores.
