Police Warn Of Skype Threat

Police Warn Of Skype Threat

Police in Milan have issued a warning that criminals of all kinds have been turning to Internet VoIP calls, rather than mobiles, to make arrangements by phone, with Skype heavily favored.

Why Skype? That’s because the calls are encrypted, and to date the company hasn’t shared the encryption key with authorities, leaving criminals safe, and police out in the cold.

Italian police have used wiretaps more and more in recent years, both on landlines and mobiles.

However, it’s not just Skype that’s likely to frustrate them. A new bill that’s been drawn up by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s government would only allow wiretaps for the most serious crimes, the BBC reports.

Samsung, Armani Unveil LCD TV Design

Samsung, Armani Unveil LCD TV Design

Samsung and Italilian designer Giorgio Armani have partnered in the past on a cell phone—which they just updated today. But in Milan today the two companies entered a new high-end market, announcing new 46- and 52-inch LCD televisions to be offered for sale in Europe, Russia, and South Korea by mid-year. The panes feature a 100 Hz refresh rate, full HD display, HDMI input and a unique pebble remote controls. The units also sport a wood frame and a four-mode lighted power switch that—no joke—enables users to customize the display of the two companies’ logos on the television.

Toshiba Files DVD Patent Suit in Italy

Little-known fact: You may be able to burn up a stack of DVDs in your basement without paying a dime, but manufacturing and selling DVDs without the necessary licensing will bring down the wrath of some big companies you probably don’t want to be dealing with. The Italian company ACME found that out on Thursday, when Toshiba formally brought charges against it for patent infringement in a Milan court.
