Japan’s trade ministry has in investigating a possible battery defect in the first-generation Apple iPod nano digital media player in the wake of fires that have caused minor property damage and injury. According to the trade ministry, it is aware of three fires caused by overheating iPod nanos which caused no injuries but burned paper and a tatami mat. However, the ministry also says Apple has reported additional incidents, including two cases where users had suffered minor burns. In all cases, the iPod nanos apparently overheated while being recharged, and officials are apparently looking into the possibility of a defect in the lithium-ion batteries used in the units.

iPod nano Sparks Investigation in Japan
Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry says it has opened a safety investigation into Apple’s iPod nano media players after an older model gave off sparks while being recharged. No injuries or damage occurred as a result of the incident, and the ministry is looking into whether any similar cases have occurred.
The sparking incident happened on January 8 in the Kanagawa prefecture near Tokyo; however, Apple didn’t report the incident to authorities until March 7. The trade ministry believes the sparking came from the nano’s integrated lithium ion battery, and has indicated its displeasure with Apple’s delay reporting the incident. Apple Japan has not commented on the investigation.
China Cracks Down On Spammers
The Ministry of Public Security (MPS) has announced a joint campaign with the country’s Ministry of Education (MOE) and Ministry of Information Industry (MII) to end spam in China. In a sign that MPS the highest levels of China’s government is taking the problem seriously, the announcement was made in conjunction with the Information Office of the State Council, China’s highest administrative body.

THQ picks up wireless gaming licenses
A multi-year deal with Twentieth Century Fox grants THQ Wireless the rights to develop and distribute games based on The Simpsons, which remains one of the most popular TV shows in the world and has recently aired its 300th episode.
THQ plans to release the first Simpsons wireless service in the USA in the second half of this year, incorporating a variety of games, graphics and MMS/SMS applications.
Closer to home, THQ Wireless has also sealed a deal with the London-based Ministry of Sound, one of the biggest independent record labels in the world and, of course, arguably the most famous nightclub in the UK.
