Judge Set To Overturn Conviction Of MySpace Bully

Judge Set To Overturn Conviction Of MySpace Bully

It looks as if Lori Drew, the Missouri woman accused of cyber bullying a teenage girl on MySpace who later killed herself, will walk free.

She supposedly posed as a teenage boy on the social networking site and developed a relationship with 13-year-old Megan Meier, before dumping her with the words "the world would be better off without." Meier committed suicide.

Drew, 50, was found guilty of illegally accessing computers, but Judge George Wu has indicated he’s tentatively acquitting her, saying:

“If Drew were convicted for breaking the social networking site’s terms of service, "you could prosecute pretty much anyone who violated terms of service."

Cable Company Charter Filing For Bankruptcy

Cable Company Charter Filing For Bankruptcy

Cable operator Charter Communications—controlled by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen—has announced it has reached a deal with investors to restructure the company under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The deal will reduce Charter’s debt by about $8 billion, with investors and bondholders getting a mix of new stock, equity stakes, and cash depending on their seniority. Paul Allen will maintain a controlling interest in the company, but holders of common stock will be left holding the bag: the stock will be canceled and holders won’t see a penny.

Dell Settles Finance Claims for $3.35 Mln

Dell Settles Finance Claims for $3.35 Mln

Computer maker Dell has agreed to pay some $3.35 million to settle 34 states’ allegations that the company’s warranty, financing, and rebate offers were deceptive and misled consumers. The agreement has Dell paying $1.5 million into a restitution account; impacted consumers will be able to submit claims for compensation. The other $1.85 million will go towards the states’ legal costs.

“More than the money, this agreement provides profoundly important business practice reforms,” said Connecticut attorney general Richard Blumenthal, in a statement. “No more bait-and-switch financing—offers touting zero-interest that become surprise high-interest charges or astounding late penalties. Our strong coalition of states will closely monitor and enforce this agreement, which has been reached with Dell’s cooperation.”

Woman Guilty In MySpace Bullying Case

Woman Guilty In MySpace Bullying Case

Lori Drew, the 49-year-old Missouri women alleged to have precipitated the suicide of a teenage girl through cyberbullying, has been found guilty of three counts of unauthorized access to MySpace.

However, she was found not guilty of three more serious felonies of violating the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.

Each of the guilty verdicts carries a possible penalty of a year in jail and a $100,000 fine. It’s believed Drew will not receive prison time, and her lawyers have already filed an appeal on one of the charges.

MySpace Cyberbullying Case Begins

Lori Drew lived with her daughter in St. Louis. Next door was Megan Meier, who was 13. Meier and Drew’s daughter were reportedly friends, but fell out. And with that began a strange and tragic tale that’s ended in a courtroom.

Prosecutors claim that after the girls argued Drew and others created the fake profile of a 16-year-old boy named Josh Evans on social networking site MySpace. Allegedly, after starting an online relationship with Meier, “Josh Evans” left her several cruel messages to end the relationship, including one saying that the world would be better off without her. Meier later hung herself.

AT&T Hangs Up on Pay Phones

AT&T Hangs Up on Pay Phones

The preponderance of cell phones in U.S. society may be creating all sorts of businesses opportunities that didn’t exist two decades ago, but it’s bad news for at least one former stalwart of the American landscape: pay phones. Over the last few years, public coin-operated phones have gone from being something one could see on many street corners and in most businesses to quaint rarities…nowadays, if you need one, you can expect to spend a lot of time trying to find one, and, if you can find one, you’ll be astonished at the cost of a single local call. There used to be almost 3 million public pay phones in the U.S.; now, there are an estimated 1 million in service.

VoIP Provider SunRocket Flares Out

You know what they say about folks who fly to close to the sun: they get burned and crash back to earth.

VoIP phone service provider SunRocket, which claimed to have more than 200,000 subscribers in April of this year, has apparently ceased operations without warning, leaving its users in a lurch. The shutdown follows reports that the company abruptly laid off nearly 200 employees at its Springfield, Missouri call center on Monday; those dismissals follow the firings of its CTO and CIO, the resignation of the company’s chief financial officer on July 2, and substantial employee layoffs on July 3.

Suit Filed Against CA Violent Game Ban

The Entertainment Software Association and the Video Software Dealers Association, two video game trade groups, are suing the state of California in an effort to overturn a new law banning the sale of violent video games to minors.

The law, signed by California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger a little over a week ago, bans the sake or rental of violent video games to minors under the age of 17, and required retailers label violent games. Factors the law uses to determine whether the content of a game is violent include “infliction of gratuitous violence upon the victim beyond that necessary to commit the killing, needless mutilation of the victim’s body, and the helplessness of the victim.” Violators would be subject to a $1,000 fine.
