Threat Of Cybercrime Rising

It was a dream team, a panel of real experts discussing the rapidly escalating threat of cybercrime. Imagine Microsoft’s chief research officer, Craig Mundie, along with Mozilla chairwoman Mitchell Baker, McAfee chief executive Dave Dewalt, Harvard law professor and Internet expert Jonathan Zittrain, as well Andre Kudelski of the digital security Kudelski group, and Tom Ilube, head of web protection company Garlik. These are people who know their business.

Davos rules prohibit attribution of comments, but according to the BBC, they discussed cybercrime, the system, cyber warfare, and possible solutions.

Mozilla To Offer Mobile Browser

Most people would agree that Mozilla’s done a pretty good job with the Firefox browser. Now they’re setting out plans for the next couple of years, and those include a mobile browser and making their existing products more effective, Vnunet reports.

“There are also other broader goals that Mozilla might take on – proposals to date include education, open source evangelism in general, open everything, assisting online communities with participatory tools,” chairperson Mitchell Baker wrote in a blog.

“These discussions will pick up steam as Mark Surman joins us. Having a set of goals for our product and technology development will also provide valuable input into that discussion.”

Google, Real Networks, and Mozilla Buddy Up

Google, Real Networks, and the Mozilla Corporation have signed onto a multi-year deal under which Real Networks will offer the Google Toolbarand Mozilla’s Firefox Web browser with Real Network’s RealPlayer media player application. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed; thearrangement builds on an existing two-year arrangement between Real Networks and Google in which Real Networks promoted the Google Toolbar.

“Real and Google share a common passion for innovation that has enhanced the Web experience,” said Rob Glaser, CEO and chairman of Real. “The Google Toolbar has been a welcome addition to Real customers because Google simplifies and enhances how they interact with the Web. We think our customers will feel the same way about the Firefox Web browser.”

Mozilla Releases Latest Browser: Firefox

The new version, dubbed “Firefox 0.8″ replaces the old “Firebird” and features an improved download manager as well as better extension and bookmark handling.

Mozilla also released a preview version of its Thunderbird e-mail client Monday. The new Thunderbird 5.0 offers the ability to synchronize with devices from Palm, and features secure password authentication for SMTP and POP3 mail clients, an upgraded spell-checker and dictionary, and fixes to various bugs.

From the Mozilla press release:

The Mozilla Foundation today announced the immediate availability of a new preview release of its next generation web browser, Mozilla Firefox. Mozilla Firefox 0.8 represents the bleeding edge of Internet technology and raises the bar for ease of use, performance, robustness and standards compliance.
