Mobile Users Want Ease Of Use, Not TV

New research reports from JupiterResearch and Azuki Systems find that U.S. mobile phone users have been slow to embrace mobile television service offerings, but would happily use more Internet services if they could just do it more easily.

A new report from JupiterResearch finds that only one percent of U.S. mobile phone users have embraced mobile television offerings. Although mobile video offerings were all the rage a couple years ago as mobile operators fought to introduce new revenue streams to their services, most consumers seem unimpressed, citing poor connectivity, high costs, and limited content selection as the main hurdles. However, some 15 percent of consumers surveyed expressed interest in watching recorded content from their own television setups on their mobile devices, which may bode well for Sling Media and other services that offer to push recorded content to remote devices.

Major Study Finds No Cell Phone-Cancer Link

A significant research study of more than 420,000 mobile phone users published in the U.K.’s Journal of the National Cancer Institute has found no link between the use of mobile telephones and cancer in mobile phone users.

For years researchers have probed the possibility that radiation and electromagnetic fields emitted by mobile telephones might lead to a greater incidence of cancer or other disorders, particularly along heavy mobile phone users, since that radiation penetrates the ears and brains of mobile users. Small-scale studies offered contradictory information, some finding no link between certain type of cancer and other disorders and the use of mobile phones, while other studies found potential correlations.

Nokia and Yahoo Extend Mobile Pact

Nokia and Yahoo Extend Mobile Pact

Leading mobile handset maker Nokia and Internet portal Yahoo have announced that they are extending their mobile Internet partnership to add email, messaging, calendaring, and other capabilities to Nokia’s new 6300, 5300 XpressMusic, 5200, and, eventually, to a range of Nokia’s Series 40 devices. Financial terms of the arrangement were not disclosed.

“Since the Series 40 platform was introduced in 2002, Nokia has sold more than 400 million mobile phones which operate using the platform,” says Kai Oistamo, Nokia’s Executive VP and General Manager for Mobile Phones. “In addition to the millions of users who can add Yahoo services to their S60 smartphone, today’s announcement empowers tens of millions of people with the ability to enjoy their favorite Yahoo! services on an even broader range of Nokia devices.”

Verizon Takes YouTube to Mobile Phones

Verizon Wirless announced today that it would begin offering videos from YouTube to its V CAST video subscribers beginning in early December. The deal is a limited-time exclusive: for a while, anyway, Verizon will be the only mobile service to offer YouTube selections to U.S. mobile phone users—and the company is clearly hoping the deal will create an upswing in subscriptions for its mobile video offerings. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Study: Most Cameraphone Users Don’t Share

A new survey from Ireland’s Research and Markets finds that while built-in cameras are among the most popular features of mobile phone handsets, comparatively few cameraphone users regularly transmit pictures to other users, or even store the images for later use.

The report, Mobile Imaging Services – Focusing on the User Experience, found that while people are initially enthusiastic about the potential uses of a phone’s built-in camera, but are quickly disappointed by difficult-to-use features, slow transmission speeds, and poor image quality.

Motorola Postpones ITunes Phone Debut

“Motorola Inc. postponed plans Thursday to unveil a cell phone that can buy and play songs from Apple Computer Inc.’s iTunes download service, a sudden decision that might reflect tensions with cellular companies who also want to sell music to mobile phone users.

Motorola spokeswoman Monica Rohleder said in Chicago that the company remains in discussions with a number of wireless carriers regarding the first iTunes phone and will announce it “when it’s ready to go,” close to its expected release time this summer. “

Consumers Will Pay More For Mobile Content

The study, undertaken by the international research firm NOP World in nine countries in North America, Europe and Asia, sought to answer what kind of mobile content people prefer, how they would like it delivered (download, streaming or browsing), and how much they would pay for it.  The main body of the study is based on interviews with people who are mobile phone users and have access to the Internet.    The main findings of the study indicate consumers have a preference for entertainment content and information that is considered useful whilst “out and about”.  Overall, enhanced content services seem to generate high interest and when fully available could even lead consumers to reduce their usage of newspapers, TV and the Internet.    The survey also found that while consumers would spend significantly more for new mobile content services, service providers will need to do more to explain the options available and differentiate services to serve all age groups.    In particular, younger consumers are willing to pay an extra
