3Deep: Web 2.0 for Your Phone’s Contact List

3Deep: Web 2.0 for Your Phone

Microsoft’s enormous Windows Mobile demo has consumed the lion’s share of media attention here at the company’s CTIA booth, but a handful of third-party companies demonstrating their upcoming apps for the phone also have some interesting concepts to share. One of the most promising we’ve spotted comes from 3Deep, a company that just launched their upcoming contact manager here at CTIA.

Here’s the premise. Your phone can already handle a ton of static details about your friends – their phone numbers, addresses, e-mail addresses, etc. But with always-on connectivity of smartphones, you can build a lot of really neat live functionality into that contact list, too. Think of what would happen if Microsoft Exchange and Twitter had a baby.

3 And T-Mobile Together On UK 3G Networks

3G is widely touted as the future of mobile networks. But government watchdog Ofcom has only demanded that 3G networks reach 80% of the UK population. In a move that will help both the companies involved and consumers, T-Mobile and 3 are combining efforts so that 98% of the population will be covered by 3G by 2009. Given that some analysts estimate that 3G usage is expected to rise by 240% in the next four years, wider coverage could give the networks a big advantage.

20 Pct of Mobile Users Dropping Landlines

A survey released today by research firm In-Stat finds that 20 percent of respondents who use wireless voice service plan to drop their traditional landline telephone service. The survey found that long-distance service has been particularly impacted by the widespread adoption of wireless telephones, with nearly hald the study’s respondents saying they had decreased landline long-distance usage, with the average decrease being some 60 percent.

The report, titled Cutting the Cord: Consumer Wireline Erosion, also found wireless usage is growing faster than wireline usage, especially in the 18 to 24 year-old market segment. “Compared to 2004 survey results, wireless has increased from one-quarter of home phone minutes to nearly one-third in 2005,” said Bryan Van Dussen, a research director with In-Stat. “With this increase in wireless usage comes an increased displacement of landline use.”

44% Want Free Video Only 19% Willing To Pay

JupiterResearch today announced in its newly released report, “Video on Cell Phones: It’s Real in 2005, but a Paying Consumer Audience Isn’t”, that 44% of online consumers surveyed by JupiterResearch are interested in viewing video on their cell phones for free, but only 19% indicate they would be willing to pay anything for those services.

Wireless carriers in the U.S. have launched mobile video applications demonstrating both the progress and the potential of the technology. The JupiterResearch report also finds the lack of network coverage, high prices for both handsets and service, and limited access to real time content, however, will dampen consumer interest in the near term.

3D Multiplayer Games Coming To Your Mobile

Gameloft, a developer and publisher of games for mobile phones, announced today at E3 of exclusive real-time multiplayer 3D games. Real-time multiplayer will be demonstrated at Gameloft’s booth #2460 in the West Hall at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) from May 18-20th.

Real-time multiplayer enables both players to compete simultaneously through a telecom network which is a significant advancement in first person shooter games and racing games such as Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm and Asphalt: Urban GT.

300M Mobile DRM Phones to Ship in ‘09

DRM technology, primarily either OMA DRM or Windows Media DRM, is finding its way into mobile phones initially via the smartphone, an advanced voice/data hybrid device for high-bandwidth networks which enable the delivery and playback of “high-value” video and audio content. As lower-end “feature phones,” which offer mid-range features like ringtones and multimedia messaging, begin to adopt DRM technology over the next several years, DTC expects nearly 40 percent of all new mobile units shipped worldwide will contain DRM. According to DTC estimates, this implies some 300 million units will ship annually by 2009, a leap of more than 100 times over a five-year period.

25% Of Cell Phone Customers Use SMS

“Usage correlates with age: 63 percent of cell phone users ages 18-27 have used text messaging compared with 31 percent for ages 28-39 and 7 percent for those over 60.

The Pew Internet and American Life Project also found that 28 percent of people who text message have received unsolicited commercial messages that way.”

There are probably several reasons why text messaging use is so low. 1. It most likely costs you money depending on the plan you are subscribed to 2. People are concerned with getting spam and thus limit their exposure 3. It is just too dang hard to type out a message using your numberpad, regardless of acronyms.

45% of Teens On Cell Phone Family Plan

This number jumps to 56 percent when teens who use or share a cellphone with their parents or other family members is factored in. In contrast, a much lower 22 percent of teens are on prepaid/hybrid plans.

“Family plans have clearly facilitated teen cellphone use, with nearly half of all teens saying that they own their cellphones, up significantly from one-third of teens from our 2003 survey,” says Linda Barrabee, Yankee Group Wireless/Mobile United States senior analyst. “The impact of family plans on the teen segment is even more compelling than the impact of alternative plans, such as prepaid/hybrid plans, which are similarly targeted at the youth market.”
