Toshiba Getting Out Of Cable Modem Business

Toshiba became one of the first two vendors to receive CableLabs certification for a DOCSIS modem in March 1999 and will become the second major vendor to exit the market following 3Com’s exit of three years ago, according to a report by Kinetic Strategies.

Toshiba was second behind Motorola in cable modem shipments in North America, with 13.9% in the first quarter, the report stated. The global DOCSIS cable modem market in the first quarter exceeded four million units, with a growth of 15% from the fourth quarter of 2003.

Qwest Offers Wi-Fi Ready DSL Modems

With the new modem, the company said, its DSL (digital subscriber line) customers will not need a direct Ethernet connection from their wireless-enabled PC to send data to other computers in their home or over the Internet. The Actiontec Wireless DSL Gateway is designed to provide a 54-megabits-per-second wireless connection within a radius of 300 feet of the modem.

Qwest said customers could save about $50 on their Wi-Fi network set-up costs, because they’ll only need to install a wireless network card to work with the modem.

Sony recalling Vaio laptop computers

The two recalled Vaio models went on sale in May – 13,000 in Japan, 3,000 in the United States and 2,000 in Europe, the Tokyo company said.

A person who touches some metal parts in the back of the laptop might feel a slight electric shock when the dial tone goes off while using the modem, spokesman Shigenori Fujita said.

The modem is also unusually slow when using an adapter to connect to an outlet, he said. Several cases of the slow modem were reported in Japan, but no cases of electronic shock have been reported and it will not cause bodily injury, Fujita said.
