VKB Enables Bluetooth Virtual Keyboard

The pocket-sized device projects a full-size two-dimensional keyboard onto any flat surface, wirelessly communicating with the host device. The BTVKB keyboard is manufactured and master distributed by i.Tech Dynamic Limited, a subsidiary of Hutchison Harbour Ring Limited

The BTVKB uses three modules to create the keyboard technology: the projection module, the illumination module and the sensor module. The first module projects the keyboard image onto the adjacent surface using a red laser diode and highly efficient diffractive optical element. The illumination module projects an infrared beam of light just above the keyboard surface. This light is invisible to the user and hovers a few millimeters above the surface. The sensor module detects the interaction of the finger with the IR beam. It receives this information, interprets the keystrokes and communicates them back to the external device (PDAs, mobile phones, etc.).

New Jacket Integrates An MP3 Player

“The product is scheduled to become available for order on the Internet in August at www.mp3blue.de.

Electrically conductive fabric is sewn into the mp3blue jacket. It’s connected to a compact electronics module and a textile keyboard on the left sleeve. The headphones and the microphone are integrated into the collar. The module contains an MP3 player with 128 Mbytes of memory, a Bluetooth gateway to control a mobile telephone, and a rechargeable battery that can supply power for up to eight hours. When the wearer of the jacket places a telephone call, the stereo system becomes a headset and the music is automatically interrupted when calls come in. To wash the jacket, it’s necessary to remove the electronics module from its holder. “

Intel Kicks Off Centrino Ad Campaign

The ads will tout the notebooks’ ability to “unwire,” or detach, from a power line and a modem or an Ethernet network cable, and to check e-mail or surf the Web using wireless networking. The Centrino bundle includes an 802.11 wireless module, along with the Pentium M processor and an Intel chipset. Centrino offered only the 802.11b standard, at first, but Intel recently upgraded it with a dual-band 802.11b/g module. The module has since been working its way into new notebook models.

Sony to sell tiny digital tuner chip

The tuner module, which is smaller than a postage stamp, can be used in mobile applications such as cell phones or personal digital assistants (PDAs).

Sony, the world’s largest consumer electronics manufacturer, says the module is the smallest of its kind and has the lowest power consumption.

Japan plans to roll out terrestrial digital broadcasting in certain regions by the end of 2003 and launch a signal specifically designed for mobile applications in 2005.

The sample module will sell for 50,000 yen ($445) with strong demand expected from manufacturers looking to develop new products using the tiny chip, a Sony spokeswoman said.

NEC develops water cooling for your laptop

This water cooling-module enables a highly advanced, slim sized, notebook PC with minimal operating noise.

The water-cooling module uses a piezoelectric pump to drive the cooling liquid. This newly structured water-cooling module is developed by integrating the pump and the tank with the aluminum radiation plate that contains the water circulation channel.

Main features of NEC’s water-cooling module

(1) Through optimized design of the radiation plate and the ingenuity of the coolant passage configuration below the CPU attached area, a cooling performance of 80W (2 times that of conventional systems) is realized. Moreover, the optimized piezoelectric pump structure suppresses the operating noise up to the whisper level of about 30dB, in turn enabling highly efficient water-cooling performance.
