HP Rolls Out First Windows 7 Certified Touchscreen Monitor

A good deal of the brouhaha about Windows 7 is centered on support for touch technology, as if computer displays with fingerprints and smudges of goop that (at best) could have been lunch are somehow going to become a technology that redefines computing for a whole new generation. Hewlett-Packard is gamely giving the technology a go, however, and hopes businesses will be as eager to adopt it as consumers: the company has just taken the wraps off its new HP Compaq L2105tm Widescreen LCD Touchscreen Display, featuring optical touch technology to enable one-finder panning and scrolling, and two-finger actions to simulate mouse input with common gestures.

Viewsonic’s VT2430 Combines HDTV, Monitor

Viewsonic

When space (or money) is at a premium, deciding between a large-screen computer monitor and a television can be an issue. Viewsonic reached out to cash-strapped college kids and other one-room dwellers on Monday with the release of its VT2340, a 24-inch computer monitor and television in one package.

The company reworked a fairly standard 1920 x 1080 resolution monitor by adding inputs and tuners, allowing it to deliver the same functionality as a full 1080p television, as well. The set has a ATSC/NTSC/QAM tuner for pulling down over-the-air HD signals, as well as an HDMI 1.3 input for connecting devices like Blu-ray and DVD players.

Samsung Brings Style, HD Tuners to Monitors

Samsung Brings Style, HD Tuners to Monitors

While flat-panel TVs bound for the living room get scrutinized from every angle, reworked bezels from famous designers, and expensive materials to make them look like they belong in a furniture catalog, your basic desktop monitor still probably has the same matte black plastic as the face of your toaster oven. Not so any more. Samsung has brought the same elegant “touch of color” design from its HDTVs down to a new line of monitors for the style-conscious.

Dell Crystal Display

Dell used to be a lot like the Chevrolet of the computer world. Their computers were plain. Domestic. Affordable. They did what you needed them to, and that was about it, a lot like that old Impala. Maybe you wouldn’t lust over them in catalogs, but if you needed to fill a lab with computers that could handle spreadsheets and word processing on a budget, Dell had you covered.

Panoram’s 24-Inch Display Does Hi-Def in 3D

Panoram

If you’re shopping for a monitor in the 24-inch range, now you have a new spec to consider along with resolution, color range and refresh times: 3D capability. Panoram Technologies, a provider of large-scale displays for business and government, released its PSP 2400 desktop monitor on Tuesday, which not only spans 24 inches at 1920 x 1200 resolution, it can display images in full 3D.

Samsung SyncMaster 225UW LCD Monitor

Samsung Electronics has occasionally been known for putting out computer monitors that combine style and flair with cutting edge technology. Their newest monitor, the SyncMaster 225UW, is certainly no exception to that rule.

The Samsung SyncMaster 225UW is a 22-inch widescreen LCD monitor which has nice design touches like a high-gloss black bezel, attractive stand and touch-sensitive buttons. The major draw of this monitor, though, for most techies will be how easy it works with Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 for doing advanced web conferencing.

Rosewill R913E 19-inch LCD for $189.99

I do not have any experience with this monitor, but at $189.99 this appears to be a very good value. It does support DVI and analog VGA inputs, and has a 4ms response rate which means it should rock for games. It comes with a 3-year warranty and it looks like it also comes with a DVI cable. Monitor Shipments Rise Again

DisplaySearch indicated in its latest Quarterly Desktop Monitor Shipment and Forecast Report that worldwidedesktop monitor shipments rose 11% in 2004 versus the same period last year, but fell 2% from the previous quarter to 31.8 million units. Q1’s LCD monitor shipment of 15.8 millionunits was above previous expectations by 300,000 units. However, with pricing continuing to rise for key sizes coupled with traditional seasonal declines in IT and CE buying cycles, Q2 projectionsshow a larger decline in unit volume than is typical.

According to DisplaySearch Vice-President Chris Connery, “While historically the market has seen traditional seasonal negative growth declines of between 1% and 3% in Q2 even in this category—one of the hottest growth categories in IT and CE—continued panel price increases have led to street price increases in a price sensitive market, and this has caused the LCD monitor market to slow more than expected in June with further weakness expected over the next few months. As a natural phenomenon as part of the LCD crystal cycle, however, projections are that the market will correct itself with pricing and production adjustments to bring the supply/demand balance back into alignment and continue to grow the LCD monitor adoption at rates previously predicted. The tendency is to over-react to quarterly slow downs, but in the maturing business of LCD production, suppliers are likely to learn from past mistakes to recognize the slowdown as more than just seasonal, but not likely to overcompensate with massive price cuts immediately. Because LCD manufacturers recognize the desktop monitor market as the significant market today for LCD technology, and because desktop monitor brands understand that retired CRT lines are not likely to be brought back online and that they will need LCDs to reach their volume targets, we expect healthy growth to return to this sector.”
