Blockbuster Prepping Set-top Box?

According to the Hollywood Reporter, struggling video rental chain Blockbuster is working on a set-top box that would stream movies and other video content directly to users’ home televisions. The device could be announced as early as this month, and would an offshoot of the Movielink movie download service Blockbuster acquired cheaply in August 2007.

A Blockbuster spokesperson characterized the story as a “rumor,” noting that the company has been talking to numerous companies about possible products and services, and noted that Blockbuester is committed to delivering content across multiple channels, including physical rentals, downloading, portable devices, by mail, and via in-store kiosks. Blockbuster did say it plans to have Movielink integrated into its its Blockbuster.com site by the end of the second quarter of 2008.

Blockbuster Looking to Acquire Movielink?

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that video rental giant Blockbuster is in talks to acquire video download service Movielink for a price in the neighborhood of $50 million. Two sources close to the companies confirm that discussions are taking place, but declined to confirm any price figures.

Movies To Be For Sale Online at DVD Release

Digital film distributors Movielink and CinemaNow have announced rental and download-to-own versions of major films from major Hollywood studios available the same day the films are released on DVD.

Movielink’s deal covers Paramount, Sony Pictures, MGM, Warner Bros., and Universal (not surprising, because they own Movielink) as well as Twentieth Century Fox. CinemaNow has signed agreements with Sony, MGM, and LionsGate Entertainment, which holds a large stake in CinemaNow. The services are currently only available to U.S. customers.

Movielink Successful Defending Lawsuit

Movielink announced today that the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware has ruled that Movielink’s online movie distribution service does notinfringe USA Video Technology Corporation’s patent, effectively ending USA Video’s patent infringement case against Movielink before the District Court.

The Court’s order granting Movielink’s motion for summary judgment on the grounds of non-infringement was entered on January 28, 2005. The underlying lawsuit was filed in April 2003, and alleged that Movielink was willfully infringing USA Video’s patent (U.S. Patent No. 5,130,792) “for a system and method for a user to request, and have delivered over an electronic network, a digitized video program.” USA Video sought injunctive relief, compensatory damages and treble damages for willful infringement. Movielink denied all claims in its answer to the complaint.

AOL To Offer Flicks Over Broadband

For a limited time, AOL has teamed up with Movielink to offer movie rental downloads for 99 cents USD or less.

From January 22 through February 26, 2.5 million AOL for Broadband members will have access to over 600 films that comprise the Movielink library at 80 percent off the regular price of $3.95 to $4.99 USD. Movies can be downloaded in either RealVideo or Windows Media formats, and be stored locally for up to 30 days.
