By now, every iPhone user has eagerly eyed the specs for the upcoming 3.0 operating system and drooled over what’s to come. But who can wait for the trees to green up and flowers to blossom while Apple drags it out of beta for release this summer?
Fortunately, one of the most hotly anticipated features for the phone – tethering – is available now with a little violation of your Terms of Service. Cool with turning to the dark side? Read on for the quick and dirty solution.
Busting Out
You might think Google offers it all through its Book Search and more. But it might prove to be paltry next to Europeana, a new site that brings together artwork, books, manuscripts, objects, maps and films from libraries, museums and galleries across the continent.
Certainly a lot of people would agree. When the EU launched the prototype of the site yesterday it achieved 10 million hits in an hour, enough to crash the servers, which couldn’t cope with the demand, the Guardian reports.
The site is multimedia, also offering films and audio pieces (one contribution from the British Library is a recording of every British dialect). Around 1,000 European institutions have contributed.
You can tell the year is dragging to a close when Google Zeitgeist appears, listing the fastest-rising (and falling) searches of the year. In 2007, it’s probably no surprise that the search taking the honors is the iPhone, which has to be Product of the Year.
The list contains few astonishing terms, although social network Badoo, which hit the second spot, is a bit of a dark horse. Beyond that, Facebook (3), YouTube (6), Second Life (8) and ClubPenguin (10) could very likely have been predicted without a crystal ball. Perhaps the only astonishment is that the list isn’t even more packed with social networking sites.
Swelling out the top ten are video sharing site Daily Motion, Webkinz (the site for stuffed animals), web messenger ebuddy and Hi5.
