Super Mario Bros. Goes Multiplayer on the Wii

Nintendo owns some of the best-known gaming franchises on the planet, and today the company has launched New Super Mario Bros. Wii for its popular Nintendo Wii gaming console…and the title amplifies the franchise’s madcap fun by enabling up to four people to play at the same time, whether in cooperative or competitive modes.

“As the holiday season draws near, it feels especially appropriate to offer consumers a new Mario adventure that they can enjoy together with family and friends,” said Nintendo of America executive VP of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway, in a statement. “New Super Mario Bros. Wii has something special for everyone, and lets players of all abilities explore the imaginative world of the Mushroom Kingdom like never before.”

Disney Developing “Pirates” Mobile Game

mDisney, the mobile publishing arm for the Walt Disney Internet Group, today said they were debuting a real-time multiplayer game on mobile phones based on the Pirates of the Caribbean move franchise. Pirates of the Caribbean Multiplayer, which will officially be open to the public in timing with Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest this summer, is currently open for beta testing.

3G Multiplayer Games Available Worldwide

Viva la Mobile will be offering games such as “Badlands”, a Java-based tank battle game set in a post-apocalyptic world. Mobile subscribers can play against other subscribers in real-time under the high-speed technology of 3G.

David J. Wong, Executive Vice President and Mobile Media Asia Pacific General Manager, says, “We expect these games to have real appeal among consumers looking for a fun and interactive gaming experience. By early 2005, a mobile user in Hong Kong will be able to play ‘Badlands’ in real-time against a gamer in Italy.”

Xbox Live hits 50,000 in Europe

It’s extremely hard to judge whether this figure represents a success or not for the service; 50,000 units sold across Europe isn’t exactly stellar in pure shipment terms, but then again, there’s no other product in the same category as Live so we don’t have anything to compare those figures with head to head.

Microsoft, for its part, certainly believes that the launch has been successful, with European Xbox Live boss Michel Cassius commenting that “we’re really excited to be reporting successful sales so soon after launch. The feedback and take-up has been very encouraging.”
