Nintendo’s E3 2009 Press Conference Wrap Up

Nintendo

We just emerged from a colorful light storm at the cavernous Club Nokia, where Nintendo has lifted the veil on not just new games, but new hardware as well. Here’s a rundown of what the company revealed:

While Microsoft hopes to eventually steamroll the Wii remote with Project Natal, Nintendo doesn’t plan to go quietly. The company revealed more details on its Wii MotionPlus controllers, which originally debuted at last year’s E3 but are now ready for production. The subtle expansion will add more precise motion to the controllers for an upcoming crop of games that will take advantage of the tech, from shooting arrows in Wii Sports Resort to slashing baddies in Red Steel 2. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 will also take advantage of the new tech, as will Grand Slam Tennis and Sega’s Virtua Tennis 2009.

Of the many games (and celebrities) Microsoft wheeled out at this year’s E3 press conference, perhaps the most fascinating actually revolved around a previously leaked announcement: Project Natal. The prototype camera accessory for Xbox allows players to interact with the system using no controller at all – merely gestures in the open air.

In an introductory video, Microsoft showed the system being used to recognize users faces as soon as they walked in front of the TV, battle computerized opponents with kicks and punches, skateboard by jumping around on carpet, skim through a list of movies with a wave of the hand, and even virtually try on different clothes.

True to rumor, there was no shortage of star power at Microsoft’s wiz-bang press conference this year – a return to form for the conference that has been so played down in recent years. Microsoft managed to round up Tony Hawk, Steven Spielberg and no lesser celebrities than the surviving Beatles themselves for its Monday morning press conference.

After debuting the cinematic trailer for the Beatles Rock Band and announcing a handful of the songs to be included, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr both bounced out from back stage on queue. Neither seemed to know quite what to say. “The game is good, the graphics are very good, and we were great,” Ringo joked. They stuck around for only a minute, wise cracking and paling around, before disappearing backstage again.
