Comcast Expands 50 Mbps Wideband Service

Earlier this year, cable operator Comcast began offering 50 Mbps Internet service to customers in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, and claimed that the new “wideband” offering would be available throughout its entire service area by the year 2010. Now the company is making its first steps in that direction, announcing an expansion of 50 Mbps service in selected markets.

According to Comcast, 50 Mbps service will go online part of New England (including the Boston metro area and southern New Hampshire), parts of Philadelphia, and New Jersey in the next few weeks. Over the next several months, Comcast says the service should be available in 10 major markets and be available to nearly 10 million homes and businesses.

Comcast Starts Rolling Out TiVo Boxes

It’s been more than two years since TiVo and Comcast entered into an agreement to pt TiVo’s industry-defining DVR technology into cable set-top boxes, but the company has finally begun deploying TiVO-empowered set-top boxes in New England.

Although the systems have been tested with Comcast employees for some time, the current rollout is Comcast’s first deployment to a set of everyday customers. If the trial goes well, Comcast plans to make the boxes available commercially later this year in in early 2008. The company has not released any pricing information for services using their TiVo-powered boxes.

Folks who were hoping the iPhone hype might die down a bit following the item’s hectic June 29th launch might be in for a disappointment: according to a new survey (PDF) of U.S. residents from Lightspeed Research, nearly one third of respondents (32 percent) say they intend to purchase an Apple iPhone, with 8 percent planing to do so in the next three months, and 22 percent planning to do so in the future.

These improvements are designed to further increase the robust recording capabilities and navigation of the service.

In addition to current DVR functionality such as the ability to record a program to watch at a later time, record high-definition programming (viewable only with an HDTV set or monitor) and pause and rewind live TV – the new dual tuner functionality allows customers to record two programs simultaneously while watching a previously recorded program, or watch a live program while recording an additional program. The dual tuner software will be automatically downloaded to the customer’s set-top box, the HD-capable Motorola DCT6412.

Verizon Gives Speed Boost To DSL

Verizon’s new DSL service offers a maximum connection speed of 3 Mbps (megabits per second) downstream and 768 Kbps (kilobits per second) upstream and is available today in 12 New England and mid-Atlantic states and in the District of Columbia. The company plans to offer 3Mbps DSL service later this year in the remaining 11 states where it now offers up to 1.5 Mbps DSL service.

“Today’s broadband customers are looking for higher speeds to support working from home, multi-player gaming and e-mailing large files like photographs, but most of all, they’re looking for a great value,” said John Wimsatt, vice president of broadband for Verizon Online. “Now they have an additional, super-fast option from Verizon, with some of the industry’s best broadband prices.”
