The Apple, AMD, Cisco & Microsoft Conspiracy to Kill the Cable Set-Top Box

I recall the arguments when Cable TV was first getting started which concluded no one would ever be stupid enough to pay for something they can get for free. Well there are clearly a good chunk of us who are terminally stupid because cable was a success although I think many of us probably wish it hadn’t been.

With Cable you are typically locked in to what the cable company wants to use for hardware and the programming the cable company wants to provide. Most of the hardware truly sucks and generally, if you want to see a DVR done badly, all you have to do is get your Cable or Satellite Company to send you one.

Nintendo Wii Topped February Console Sales

New sales figures from market research firm NPD show the Nintendo Wii was the top-selling video game console for the month of February, moving 335,000 units during the month. Those sales figures also make it the only console system to have outsold Sony’s now-obsolete PlayStation 2, which moved 295,000 units during the month.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 came in third place—or, second-place amongst so-called next-generation consoles—having sold 228,000 units. Sony managed to move 127,000 PlayStation 3 systems.

SEGA Signs Silicon Knights

“The companies will collaborate on a new franchise for next-generation consoles, they said this afternoon, although details have not been discussed. “Next-generation consoles” could include any of Xbox 2, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Revolution.

“The partnership brings SEGA more Western-developed content in preparation for high-growth opportunities presented by next-generation hardware platforms,” SEGA said in a statement.”

Silicon Knights is responsible for games like Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes.

Console Shipments Continue To Decline

The high-tech market research firm finds that Sony is still dominating the market with its PlayStation 2 (PS2) console, which shipped its 70 millionth unit in January 2004.

“As is typical with the back end of a market, this one is characterized by companies cutting prices on both hardware and software to entice more casual, value-oriented consumers,” said Brian O’Rourke, a senior analyst with In-Stat/MDR. “However, as can be expected, year-over-year shipment declines will continue until all next-generation consoles are on the market in 2006.”

EA To Acquire Criterion Software Group

With the acquisition, EA assumes Criterion’s studio in Guildford, UK; two globally recognized intellectual properties, Burnout and Black; and the RenderWare middleware technology.

Under a previous agreement, Criterion’s Burnout3 game is being published by EA and is scheduled for release on all major platforms in September. Criterion is also developing a highly-anticipated game known simply as Black. Both titles received strong critical support earlier this year at the recent E3 game exhibition in Los Angeles.

“This is a great fit,” said EA Chairman and CEO Larry Probst. “Criterion offers us studio talent and a proven management team, globally recognized intellectual property and technology infrastructure that will accelerate our readiness on the next generation of consoles.”

Xbox 2 Set To Go Multiprocessor

This information confirms reports received from developers over the past weeks, with the first solid facts about the Xbox 2 slipping out after Microsoft briefed a number of its key development partners on the current state of the system.

Our sources indicate that the console will use “four or more” of the IBM PowerPC processors, an architecture which will force game developers to significantly rethink the way that games are programmed in order to take full advantage of it.
