Dell Desperate for Extended Warranty Business

Like many of you, I hate telemarketers.

They’re rude, pushy, obnoxious, won’t take no for an answer and always inevitably ring a) during dinner b) three seconds after the baby’s finally drifted off to sleep or c) right as you’re rushing out the door or have just begun sprinting for the can. If I had a dollar for every wet footstep left behind as I streaked through the house, towel flapping in the wind as I sped out of the shower expecting an important call only to be greeted by “Lawrence” of Arabia? Let’s just say Smith & Wesson wouldn’t have trouble making quarterly projections this year.

Study: Women Rule Mobile Gaming

Historically, electronic games of any kind have been seen as more of a “guy thing,” right alongside muscle cars, power tools, and other techno doodads. Well, a new study from Parks Associates flies in the face of that conventional wisdom in at least one arena, finding some 59 percent of U.S. consumers who play games on their mobile phones are women. Women also comprise 61 percent of users playing mobile games one to four hours per month, and 58 percent of users playing mobile games more than 4 hours a month.

Nokia launches 7700 television phone

Finland’s Nokia said in a statement issued on the eve of its mobile Internet conference in Nice that it expected to ship some 100 million phones with color screens, java software, and enhanced messaging options in 2004.

It also said it expected to have 15 phones on the market in 2004 offering high-speed EDGE network connections, with deliveries of EDGE-enabled handsets to reach around 100 million units by end-2005.

The company also launched new phones including its 7700 model, which will allow users to watch television. The 7700 will also have video and camera options and an in-built FM radio.

X03 set for Sept 16/17

Microsoft’s annual shindig in Southern Europe moves to the coast of France this year, with sunny Nice confirmed as the location for the event on the 16th and 17th of September.

A teaser email was sent out to invitees directing them to this rather bizarre website full of green dancing crabs. We know pollution is on the rise, but it appears the lucky few who get invited this year will have to wear some sort of protective clothing.

The event, now in its third year, will once again reveal Microsoft’s strategy for the forthcoming year, and will hopefully give the assembled the chance to have a sneak peak of some of the exclusive titles on offer.

“Plagiarism” fears kept Mario under wraps

Japan’s Nintendo Dream magazine is reporting that Nintendo did indeed plan to show Mario 128, the next instalment in Shigeru Miyamoto’s massively successful Mario franchise, at E3 last month – but decided not to at the eleventh hour for fear that other developers would copy ideas from the game.

Apparently, Nintendo feared that the new gameplay ideas in the game – which will take the series in an entirely new direction, according to the company – would be stolen by competitors and might even have appeared in other games before Mario 128 arrived on shelves.
