Holiday Gifts: HD Video Cameras

kodak-zi82

It’s easier than ever to shoot high-definition video. You can do it with traditional-style camcorders, of course, but also with cameras that also are designed to take still photos — from high-end “digital SLRs” to cameras that slip into your shirt pocket. I’ve got recommendations in all three categories — listed here from least to most expensive. All of these record HD video and have “HDMI” output connections that let you view your masterpieces on an HD display.

Nikon Coolpix S1000pj Projector Camera

Nikon Coolpix S1000pj Projector CameraWhile some old 35mm diehards still bemoan the lack of prints and negatives for every shot, sharing pictures in the digital age has actually gotten a lot easier: You can have them printed instantly at a kiosk or at home, e-mail them in seconds, arrange them in online albums for friends and family, and even stretch them across your HDTV. Nikon Coolpix P90 Review

Summary

Consider it mega-zoom madness, or more like a super-zoom summer fever. Fresh on the heels of the somewhat challenged 20x zoom Canon PowerShot SX1 IS and the Editors’ Choice 20x Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX1 comes the Nikon Coolpix P90 with a more potent 24x lens. Like the Canon and Sony, it too is a wide-angle zoom, but in this case it’s a whopping 26-624mm, versus 28-560mm for the SX1 and HX1. And the Nikon is a 12-megapixel digicam, versus the 10-megapixel Canon and 9.1-megapixel Sony. That said, the P90 isn’t nearly as sophisticated or as expensive as the other two, plus it only takes VGA videos, compared to 1080P movies from the others. The P90 is really for the person who just wants to take pictures and is looking for the convenience of a huge zoom. Let’s see if it’s worth the cost of entry, or if you should spend more for a different camera.

Nikon D3000 Review

Summary

The Nikon D3000 is a budget version of the D5000 and is Nikon’s smallest DSLR. The D3000 doesn’t have the video recording capabilities of the D5000 and has a slightly smaller sensor at 10 megapixels versus 12 megapixels for the D5000. It does however have a larger 3-inch LCD display, which doesn’t rotate like the D5000 screen. Other notable features include 3 fps of continuous shooting, 6 automatic scene modes, and automatic image sensor cleaning.

Nikon D300s Review

Summary

The Nikon D300s is Nikon’s upgrade to their D300 model. The D300s adds the capability of capturing 720p video at 24 frames per second with stereo input. The D300s keeps the same 12.3 megapixel DX-format sensor as the D300 and offers continuous shooting up to 7 frames per second. Its one-button live view feature let users activate live view for challenging shooting conditions. Other notable features of the D300s include a 3-inch LCD display, 51-point autofocus, and dual memory card slots (CF and SD).

Nikon D5000 Review

Summary

Nikon’s breakthrough D90 ushered in the era of the HD video-taking DSLR last September, and now the company has introduced a somewhat similar model for around $250 less. This is why we love the CE business. While not a complete apples-to-apples comparison, just like the D90, the new D5000 is a 12.3-megapixel DSLR that records 1280 x 720p video at 24 frames per second. Let’s see if the D5000 is as good a deal as it appears to be on the surface.
