Apple’s Portable Gaming Emerges as Main Rival to Nintendo
For the last six years, Nintendo has been swimming high with great profits. Recently, however, the company announced that it would reduce its sales forecasts and reported a 52% drop in profits after sales of the Wii and DS game consoles dropped.
Nintendo is facing increased competition from Sony and Microsoft with cheaper consoles being more of a factor in the market. Nintendo is also facing stiff competition in the mobile gaming space from Apple with its iPhone and iPod touch.
EA Ships Dead Space Extraction for Nintendo Wii
Early in the year, mega game studio Electronic Arts announced it was producing a sequel to its action-horror-scifi title Dead Space…but the surprise was that the company’s Visceral Games was planning to product the sequel for the Nintendo Wii—a platform not known for its action titles, particularly of the rated “M” variety. Now, EA has made good on its promise: Dead Space Extraction is now shipping for the Nintendo Wii. And, yes, it has monsters and goo and gore, and yes: it’s rated M.
Nintendo Packs Two MotionPlus Add-ons into Wii Sports Resort
When Nintendo rolled out its Wii Sports Resort title with the Wii MotionPlus accessory designed to enhance the accuracy and responsiveness of the motion-sensitive Wii remote, responses were generally quite good: the title showcased possibilities of the Wii controller that third party developers have barely tapped into, and while the bowling game might be a lot like the Wii Sports game that ships with every console, sword fighting, archery, canoeing, wakeboarding, and other games were very well executed. The problem? If you’d already bought a second controller for your Wii, Wii Sports Resort only came with a single MotionPlus accessory. If you wanted to play any Wii Sports Resort titles with multiple players, you had to shell out another $20 for a second accessory.
Sony Planning to Move on PS3 Motion Controller
It’s been almost three years since Nintendo began proving conclusively that a motion-sensitive controller can be a hit in the video gaming world, and now Sony has announced it plans to get in on the act, saying it plans to ship a new motion controller for its PlayStation 3 video game system. However, folks who were planning on maybe buying (or receiving) a stocking-stuffer for the holiday season are out of luck: the new controller won’t be available until “spring 2010,” which in marketing-speak means sometime before mid-June.
Tokyo Game Show Kicks Off with Turnaround Hopes
The Tokyo Game Show, billed as the world’s largest computer entertainment fest, kicked off Thursday with hopes that depressed sales of game consoles will enjoy a holiday resurrection.
Hurt by the global recession and few blockbuster releases, the video game industry has been in a slump for much of the year. U.S. sales of video games in August tumbled for the sixth straight month, according to market researcher NPD Group.
Nintendo Preparing to Drop Wii Pricing to $199?
Nintendo hasn’t changed the price of its Wii gaming console one penny in the nearly three years since it was introduced—and the company hasn’t had to, since for the bulk of that time Nintendo hasn’t been able to make enough Wiis to keep retailers stocked. However, recent price drops on the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3 have given both consoles an uptick in sales, where Nintendo has actually seen Wii sales declining—although they’re still leading the console game.
July Video Game Sales Show 29 Pct Decline
Media analysis firm NPD has released its figures for video game hardware and software sales for the month of July 2009…and thoughts of the video game industry somehow being “recession-proof” are being set aside as the industry marks a 29 percent year-on-year decline in sales to $848.9 million for the month. Taken on their own, hardware sales suffered an even steeper decline: 37 percent compared to July of 2008. Software sales were down 26 percent and accessories sales down 12 percent.
July marks the fifth consecutive month of declining revenue for the video game industry. So far for 2009, the industry has earned $8.16 billion, which is a 14 percent drop in revenue year-to-date compared to 2008.
50 Million Wiis By Spring 2009?
Nintendo has issued a forecast, stating that it expects to sell a staggering 25 million Wii consoles over the next twelvemonths. If true, that will bring the total up to 50 million. Released in November 2006, it’s been a massive success, and is the great driving force behind the company rise in profits. Profits have gone up 50% to $2.5 billion for the Japanese financial year ending March 31, and Nintendo enjoyed total sales of $16.2 billion. “Nintendo’s strategy is to accelerate thecurrent sales momentum from ‘must-have for every family’ to ‘must-have for everyone’,” the company said in a statement, adding that it would reach that stage by “continuously introducingnew and unique software, and new services which take advantage of its expanded installed base.” Ninteno also shipped 30 million DS handheld games last year, although it expects a dip to28 million this year.
