Sony Names Stringer First Foreign CEO

“Sony’s board agreed to appoint Stringer, 63, at an extraordinary meeting in Tokyo on Monday morning. Current CEO Nobuyuki Idei, 67, will step down to take responsibility for slumping earnings after five rocky years at the helm.

Stringer, a former TV journalist, will face the difficult task of boosting profitability at Sony, a sprawling conglomerate whose core electronics division is in danger of falling into the red for a second straight year in the business term ending on March 31 amid tough price competition and a lack of hit products. “

Sony’s Profit Slides 23 Percent For Year

The Tokyo-based electronics and entertainment giant said Tuesday it expected earnings would rebound in the current year as cost-cutting efforts make an impact and new products drive sales.

In the January-March quarter, Sony’s net loss narrowed to 38.2 billion yen ($352 million) from 111 billion yen in the same period a year earlier. Sales rose 7.1 percent to 1.77 trillion yen ($16.3 billion) from 1.65 trillion yen.

Sony puts $719 tag on PSX system

It hopes the all-in-one entertainment system, which also has a hard disk drive (HDD) recorder, will boost its electronics division, whose aging product line-up and high costs were a big factor behind a net loss of almost $1 billion in the January-March quarter.

“There is the game industry and game development and we are trying to fuse the consumer electronics business with games to make a new growth area,” Sony Chief Executive Nobuyuki Idei told Reuters at a technology industry show in Makuhari, near Tokyo.

Sony PSX to hit Japan stores by year-end

Sony, the world’s largest consumer electronics maker, said the PSX would feature a satellite TV tuner, DVD recorder, hard disk drive (HDD) recorder and PlayStation 2 (PS2) game player.

A version with a 160-gigabyte HDD will sell for 79,800 yen ($719) and be able to record up to 204 hours of television, the company said. It will also sell a 250-gigabyte version for 99,800 yen.

Chief Executive Nobuyuki Idei said in May that one of the growth strategies for Sony’s electronics business would be to integrate it with the company’s profit-making games division.

Sony Qualia line announced

Initially, the new line will launch only in Japan, and will include both audio and video products in addition to a small pocket camera. Sony President Kunitake Ando had previously suggested the linewould launch by March 2003.

According to Sony, the Qualia project started in secret in May 2001, and the organization’s network of companies planned and proposed a number of possible products. These proposals were reviewed by the “Qualia Committee,” which is composed of members of Sony’s top management. “The criteria for selection will not only be functionality and specifications,” says the company, “but also the ability to create ‘Emotional Values.’”

Sony unveils new PSX game machine

The Japanese electronics and entertainment giant said the PSX is a “crossover” between game machines and consumer electronics devices that works more like the PlayStation 2 in using a game controller to quickly search and select functions.

The PSX, which has a hard drive that can store data, goes on sale in Japan this year and is planned for introduction in the United States and Europe early next year, Sony executive deputy president Ken Kutaragi said. He refused to give a price.

“We want an extreme product to represent a new platform out of Sony,” he told reporters.
