Bose Tweaks Noise Reduction in QuietComfort 15 Headphones

Bose Tweaks Noise Reduction in QuietComfort 15 Headphones

If you live or work in lcoations with a ton of extraneous mouse (the author look meaningfully out the window at the rumbling carpet cleaning van 15 yards away), noise-cancelling headphones can be a godsend if you need to be able to hear details in audio or music, rather than just recognize bits and pieces as they go by. To that end, high-end audio company Bose has announced its QuietComfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones, which improve on the active and passive noise reduction and cancellation technologies in earlier models to deliver improved audio quality across a wide range of frequencies in even noisier environments.

LG’s Unbelievable Noise Cancellation Tech

LG

Of all the new technologies LG highlighted at its press conference on Thursday, the demo that got perhaps the biggest reaction came from relatively mundane noise cancellation tech. The laughs of disbelief may not quite have been quite the reaction the company hoped for, though.

LG’s new DSE noise reduction uses dual microphones within a phone to digitally filter out background noise. The company’s Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Woo Paik, showed off the new technology in a demo reel that features a man in a quiet office calling his wife, who is standing on a busy street corner. The noise level is comparable to the city evacuation scenes in all those post-apocalyptic movies: cars rushing by, shouting, horns, the whole works.

Many people who have succumbed to the temptation of noise canceling headphones can give an opinion about how effective the noise-reduction technologies can be: suffice to say some are more effective than others. But one thing the majority of users seem to agree on: as far as audio quality goes, noise-canceling headphones usually aren’t anything special, and sometimes they’re downright terrible.

JVC aims to change that with its new top-of-the-line HA-NC250 noise-canceling headphones. The new cans combine noise-canceling and isolation technology with what JVC promises is outstanding sound quality in order to provide an outstanding listening experience.

JVC Unfolds Noise-Canceling Headphones

Audio and electronics manufacturer JVC has announced its new HA-NC80 noise cancelling headphones. The NC80s featur dual-mode noise cancellation circuitry which enables users to adapt the noise-cancellation feature to different environments: a “wide” setting cancels frequencies across a broad range (like, say, noise on a commercial airliner), while a “low” mode cancels a narrower set of frequencies (like, say, typical noise in a train or bus). JVC says the noise canceling circuitry can offer up to 75 percent noise reduction; although, of course, the noise cancellation feature can be turned off entirely, leaving the user with the cozy effects of the closed-cup padded earpieces.

Electronics maker JVC showed off a bundle of products at CEDIA this week, including a pair of new 40- and 46-inch LCD televisions which support native 1080p resolutions and offer optional RS-232C control interfaces for integration with home or business automation systems.

Noise-canceling technology uses a built-in microphone that detects environmental noise from low-frequency sources (20-1500hz), such as jet engines, leaf blowers, subway trains, server fans, and household appliances. Sony engineers have improved a noise canceling circuit that creates an equal an opposite sound wave to cancel such noise, creating a better environment for listening to in-flight movies or portable audio devices. For example, Sony tests indicate that the MDR-NC50 headphones offer a 14db reduction of sounds at the 300hz level.

Using 40 mm drivers and neodymium magnets in combination with its noise cancellation circuitry, the MDR-NC50 headphones provide the audio quality and clarity of a home listening headphone – even when they’re used far from home.

Sound Isolation Vs. Noise Canceling

A recent study compared the performance of Shure sound isolating earphones against three models of noise-canceling headphones and found that the sound isolating design was more effective at reducing the level of a broadband noise signal. The tests were conducted in accordance with recognized industry standards for measuring the noise attenuation capabilities of hearing protection devices and noise-canceling headphones.

The study results revealed that the E3c with foam sleeves was the best performer among the Shure units tested, as it reduced noise by 10 – 27 decibels more than even the best-performing noise-canceling model tested. Further, the data indicated that all of the Shure model variations tested provided greater overall noise reduction at the lower frequencies where noise-canceling models are reputed to be most effective.

Altec Lansing AHP712 Headphones Debuted

Designed for on-the-go music or multimedia lovers who demand the best in quality, the AHP712 measures ambient noise across an unusually wide range of frequencies, then creates counteractive soundwaves that reduce outside distractions to deliver the best audio experience possible.

“Altec Lansing’s new AHP712 is ideal for frequent travelers who love movies, music or games, but who often deal with outside distractions like jet engines or subway noise. It can be used anytime, anywhere, even without entertainment output, for those who simply crave quiet,” Bob Garthwaite, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Altec Lansing Technologies. “The AHP712’s outstanding comfort and exceptional active noise reduction capabilities make it the perfect audio companion for people on the move.”

Sound Software May Help Find Car Problems

“Sometimes noise is a good way to identify mechanical faults — where noise isn’t a problem but can lead you to problems,” SenSound president Sergio Mazza said. “We analyze over several frequencies, to tell the manufacturer where and at which frequency noise is leaking.”

Zalman Theatre 6 Headphones Review

Quote from the review at HiTechMods:

“Zalman is mainly known for silent cooling products in their Computer Noise Prevention System line. The newest product to come from Zalman has nothing to do with lowering noise levels but rather creating noise. They have changed focus away from cooling products to create a new set of 5.1 channel headphones. During the night or at LAN parties loud speakers are not very practical because you don’t want to wake someone sleeping in a different room or bother the gamer sitting next to you. These headphones are designed to reproduce the big sounds created from 5.1 channel home theater speakers but in a much smaller package. Today at HiTechMods will be checking out Zalman’s new Theatre 6 Real Surround Sound Headphones.”
