EU says electronic retail sites mislead consumers

The European Union urged consumers on Wednesday to be wary of misleading selling tactics by online electronic goods retailers marketing items like digital cameras, game consoles, laptops and mobile phones.

EU Consumer Affairs Commissioner Meglena Kuneva said an investigation by national and EU experts had found that 55 percent of 369 Web sites checked "are letting consumers down," using dubious selling techniques that had to be changed.

She said they intentionally misled consumers over pricing, buyers’ rights and how to contact the online retailers.

Opera Looks to Reinvent the Web with Integrated Services

Norway’s Opera software has been working to push the Web browser envelope for years, and while they haven’t captures massive market share among desktop browsers they have made significant inroads in mobile browsers and other arenas—who do you think made the Web browser in the Nintendo Wii? Now, Opera Software is looking to “reinvent the Web” via Opera Unite, a new collection of free services that lets users share files, music, pictures, and more—plus run their own chat and Web servers—all without requiring data storage from upstream servers. Communication all happens between individual users’ personal computers, with no middle man.

Norway Trials Laptops For School Exams

Norway Trials Laptops For School Exams

In Nord-Trondelag county in Norway, all students are given a laptop for school work when they turn 16. Now the government is testing the use of those laptops for exams.

Sounds like an invitation to cheating? Wrong. The computers have some specially-designed software to prevent that eventuality.

The laptops have all the usual software for word processing and other student needs, with specific software for certain subjects the students might take. The idea behind this trial is to have the pupils using machines they know for the exams.

Aliph’s original Jawbone headset was released about a year ago to solid reviews; the Jawbone Prime aims to improve on the original with improved noise reduction that takes out an additional 6 to 9 db of background noise while leaving the speaker’s voice strong and clear.

Google Axes Apps, Offices

Though seemingly immune to the economic forces that have driven other companies into such a slump lately, Google finally began to feel the hurt on Wednesday when it closed three engineering offices and eliminated many of its least popular apps.

According to the Official Google Blog, the company will close its offices in Texas, Norway, and Sweden, but the 70 employees who currently work there will be given the opportunity to keep their Google jobs at other locations. The move, the company says, is part of an effort to create a smaller number of more effective engineering offices, rather than the scattering of 40 that exists now.

Apple Faces iTunes Challenge in Norway

Back in 2006, Norway’s consumer Ombudsmen sided with critics that claimed the Norwegian version of the iTunes store violated consumers’ rights by tying content purchased there to Apple’s iPods and iTunes software. (Presumably, that would now be extended to include things like the iPhone and Apple TV.) The issue may have falling off the international radar, but Norway hasn’t forgotten about it: the consumer Ombudsman Björn Erik Thon is taking Apple before Norway’s Market Council in an effort to get the company to open up the iTunes store to devices other than the iPod.

YouTube Embraces Indie Film

YouTube Embraces Indie Film

As video sharing site YouTube gets closer and closer to consumers’ living room television, it’s no surprise the service is trying to come up with ways to offer higher quality content than, say, teenagers doing karaoke via a Web cam or eight years-olds staging sock puppet plays. To that end, YouTube has announced Screening Room, a dedicated area of the YouTube site featuring high-quality shorts from independent filmmakers.

TeliaSonera Makes iPhone Deal

Sweden’s TeliaSonera has announced it has reached an agreement with Apple to offer the iPhone in several Nordic and Baltic nations later this year, including Sweden (of course), Norway, Denmark, and Finland, as well as the Baltic nations of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.

As with other recent announcement of deals with international mobile operators, the announcement was brief and offered no information on pricing, dates of availability, or what version of the iPhone would be offered to users. Apple is widely expected to introduce a 3G version of the iPhone early next month at its WWDC developer conference.

Zattoo Streams European TV

Zattoo has launched a service in several European countries that allows users to stream terrestrial TV channels from their own countries (plus a few others fromabroad) to the computers.   The legal service uses a proprietary player, which is available as a free download, and works on both PC and Mac. Currently available in Belgium, Denmark, France,Germany, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK, the company has big plans to expand not only the number of countries included, but also the number of continents.   It works as a peer-to-peernetwork, with the watched program flowing from one computer to another. In the UK, viewers can catch a total of 29 channels, including all five terrestrials, BBC3 and BBC 4, Al-Jazeera, ABC News Now, as well as news from France and Germany and, most importantly for some, the PokerChannel.   Alexandra Illes, manager for Zattoo in the UK, said:   “People often have to compromise their viewing choices with other household members, such as their flatmates orpartner,. Zattoo helps eliminate this as anyone with a computer and internet connection can watch TV via the internet. It’s just like owning another TV."

Microsoft Swallows Fast Search & Transfer

Microsoft Swallows Fast Search & Transfer

Microsoft may have been unsuccessful so far in its attempts to romance Yahoo, but its moves on a company from Norway have been much more successful. On Friday, Microsoft announced that it had completed settlement of its tender offer for Fast Search & Transfer ASA, an enterprise search company based in Oslo.

Fast, which provides search platforms to help companies sift through and access internal data, is now a Microsoft subsidiary, but will stay planted in Oslo. The company’s CEO, Markus Lervik, will become Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Enterprise Search, and existing Fast customers will be able to continue their relationships with the company.
