Palm Launches Its Own App Store

PDA pioneer Palm has been on the ropes for a few years, seemingly unable to gather momentum behind its efforts to repossess and renovate the Palm OS and then introducing (but never shipping) the Foleo companion device…which, somewhat ironically, went over like a lead balloon just before so-called "nettops" became all the rage. Now, Palm is bootstrapping itself into the current mobile rage, opening the Palm Software Store—being run by PocketGear—where Palm device users can obtain more than 5,000 applications and games for their Palm OS and Windows Mobile devices…and more than 1,000 of those items are available for free. The move follows Apple’s well-known (and successful) App Store for iPhone and iPod touch applications, as well as similar efforts from RIM and Google.

Asus Crams Big Graphics in a Little Box

While mini desktops with high-efficiency CPUs and low-noise cooling systems seem to be especially in vogue lately, gamers and performance enthusiasts have largely overlooked the computers due to their lackluster integrated graphics chips. Asus’ new Essentio CS5110, announced on Tuesday, may change that. The company claims its Mini PC is the world’s smallest desktop to boast a discrete graphics card.

Packed into its 11-inch tall mini tower shell, the CS5110 boasts a GeForce MN8600M GT 256 that uses the Mobile PCI Express Module (MXM), a graphics interface originally developed for notebooks. Other key features for home theater users include 1080p high-def video output, 7.1-channel audio with optical S/PDIF output, and an optional Blu-ray drive. It also supports the 802.11n wireless standard for streaming high-def content without hiccups, and a new cooling system that cuts noise to 23.9dB.

Amazon Subsidiary Brings Us TV Greats

Amazon.com subsidiary CustomFlix Labs today said they’d reached agreements with NBC Universal, A&E Home Video and PBS to begin making available popular broadcast content via a new “DVD on Demand” service on the Amazon.com Web site. Financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Under this new DVD on Demand service, said CustomFlix, content from television programming networks’ vast library of normally archived material is being encoded and distributed on to DVDs as consumers select and purchase them online. For NBC, this includes a wide variety of titles such as the “Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show” and a compilation of popular “Where in the World is Matt Lauer?” segments from the “Today” show. More NBC titles are being added on an ongoing basis, with many DVDs being pre-sold during the initial airing of the broadcast.
