Wii Defies Recession as PS3 Plummets

Wii Defies Recession as PS3 Plummets

While the rest of the world copes with widespread recession and economic turmoil, thick-skinned Nintendo set a new United States sales record in November, with more than 3.6 million Wii and DS systems sold.

According to NPD Group, Nintendo’s November Wii sales of 2 million exceed what the system has ever sold in a non-December month, even outshining last year’s performance in a decidedly cheerier economy, and its November launch back in 2006. The new numbers bring total Nintendo Wiis sold up to 15.4 million in the U.S.

F.E.A.R. Launches Fan Film Contest

F.E.A.R. Launches Fan Film Contest

Sierra Entertainment and GameTrailers have teamed up to launch a user-generated movie contest called “Show Us Your F.E.A.R.” via the official Web site for the upcoming action/horror game F.E.A.R.—First Encounter Assault Recon, due to ship in November 2006.

In the contest, users submit their own unique, short, scary, and creative videos which demonstrate what they feel to be the true meaning of the word fear. (We imagine for some, the films could be titled A Day Without Playstation.) On October 24, GameTrailers will announce five to ten finalists for the contest, and then let site users vote for their favorites. The winner will receive a $1,000 grand prize.

PlayStation 2 Slims Down In Europe

European computer gamers will be able to get their hands on the very latest PlayStation 2 on November the 1st, following the console’s recent launch at the Tokyo Game Show.

The new look PlayStation 2 has been trimmed down to just 2.8cm thick (the current model is 7.8cm thick), its weight has been halved and internal volume reduced by 75%. It’s also network ready, with a built-in network connector for online gaming across Europe.

There are already over 1,000 games titles available and the new look PlayStation 2 will be supported by a line-up of exciting and innovative new titles, scheduled for launch in time for the peak Christmas period.

Key Xbox titles pushed back…again

The biggest news is that Halo 2 has slipped back a further two months, and is now scheduled to arrive in April – as is Ninja Gaiden, another major game for the console which has fallen back a few more months on top of already announced slippage.

Rare’s Kameo: Elements of Power is now scheduled for a June launch, while Fable – recently confirmed as slipping past Christmas – is slated for an optimistic Q2 2004 launch date, as is Rare’s Conkers: Live And Uncut, which is believed to have been substantially rethought following a poor reception at E3 back in May.
