Hitachi Develops New Chip For Cell Phones

The chip is for cell phones incorporating Java technology, which is used to move animated images. Video-processing capabilities will be enhanced when the chip is integrated with image processingchips for cell phones.

The major electronics manufacturer has achieved the faster speed by having circuitry handle the work previously done by software.

Cell phones have been able to process just 10 frames per second until now, but Hitachi’s new chip will enable a cell phone to display 46 frames per second — a level comparable to that of SonyComputer Entertainment Inc’s PlayStation 2 console, according to Hitachi.

Device Records TV For Japanese Cell Phones

The pyramid-shape recording device, measuring 11.5 centimeters by 11.5 cm by 7.3 cm, can be connected with a TV or a videocassette recorder by a cable. It uses SD memory cards or miniSD cards for recording. A 128-megabyte card is capable of recording programs for about two hours.

AT&T Wireless Sets Bid Deadline

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, AT&T Wireless’ investment banker Merrill Lynch & Co. sent a letter outlining the timeframe to a number of potential suitors, including Cingular Wireless L.L.C.’s parent companies SBC Communications Inc. and BellSouth Corp., current minority shareholder NTT DoCoMo Inc., Nextel Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group plc.

Japan’s DoCoMo Launches Smart Chip Phone

NTT DoCoMo, Inc. announced Monday that it will launch a trial of the “i-mode® FeliCa preview service,” using mobile phones equipped with FeliCa contactless IC chip technology developed by SonyCorporation.

The phones will be used for public transport tolls, electronic money, personal identification and other trial services between December 17, 2003 and the summer of 2004.

DoCoMo will supply 27 participating service providers with FeliCa-equipped mova® N504iC and SO504iC mobile phones (2,500 each) and each company will distribute the phones to its customers. Together with each company, DoCoMo encourage the customers to use the company’s trial services. The companies will represent business fields such as banking, convenience stores, television broadcasting, game software and retail ticketing. Users, services and service launch dates will vary depending on each company.

The phone can be set to operate exclusively in 2G or 3G mode, or set to switch automatically between the two networks according to available signal strength. Currently, the FOMA network area extends to approximately 91% of Japan, while the mova 2G network covers approx. 100 % of the nation. As the dual handset realizes a vast service area, FOMA users can be assured of nationwide access, including such vicinities as mountainous regions.

The FOMA N2701 is a multitasking handset, meaning that the user can perform multiple tasks simultaneously, such as talk on the phone while downloading a file or browsing the web.
