New York Threatens Comcast Over Child Porn

New York Threatens Comcast Over Child Porn

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has indicated his office will pursue legal action against cable operator and broadband provider Comcast if it doesn’t quickly move to comply with a “code of conduct” drawn up by the state designed to impede online trafficking in child porn. Among other things, the code of conduct specifies that ISPs will block access to Web sites and bulletin board systems that distribute child porn.

Cuomo described Comcast as continuing “to drag its heels when it comes to taking every necessary action to eliminate online child porn from the Internet.”

Time Warner Spins Off Cable Unit

Corporate giant Time Warner had made good on its plans to sell its cable and broadband business—except the company is not selling its cable unit, but will instead spin it off into its own company. In a deal values at about $10.9 billion (PDF), Time Warner will completely split with Time Warner Cable by the end of 2008.

“After the transaction, each company will have greater strategic, financial, and operational flexibility and will be better positioned to compete,” said Time Warner CEO Jeffrey Bewkes, in a statement.

Built Slims Down Laptop Backpacks

Anyone who’s ever tried lugging around a notebook computer knows it’s not always easy. Sure, there are specially-designed bags designed to offer the pinnacle of protection for your computing investment, as well as quick access and ways to handle all those cables, peripherals, and add-ons you always seem to need. Now Built NY wants to streamline that problem with its new Laptop Backpacks, which offer a breathable, ultra-slim way to carry around your notebook computer and accessories without looking like you’re a new Army recruit lugging a rucksack to basic training.

NY May Bar Sex Offenders from Social Sites

New York City prosecutors have added their support to a proposed law that would bar registered sex offenders from accessing social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook, and Bebo.

The Electronic Security and Targeting of Online Predators Act (e-STOP) was introduced to the New York Assembly and Senate last week, and to the degree it would bar sex offenders from contacting minors via social networking sites, it is the first proposed law of its kind in the nation. Under the proposed statute, registered sex offenders would be barred from accessing social networking sites and impose other limits on their Internet usage. For instance, sex offenders would be required to register all their instant messaging screen names and any other identifiers they use online; that information would then be shared with social networking sites so they can pre-screen and block access.

Microsoft Opposes Google-DoubleClick Merger

Microsoft Opposes Google-DoubleClick Merger

In an ironic twist, Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday in opposition to the proposed merger between Internet titan Google and online advertising giant DoubleClick. The proposed deal is facing antitrust scrutiny as competition heats up in the Internet advertising arena. While acknowledging the industry is very fluid with companies like Yahoo, AOL, and even Microsoft (which just paid over $6 billion for aQuantive) making large moves in recent months, Smith still told the Committee that Google’s acquisition of DoubleClick poses "an imminent risk of giving a single company the degree of market power that could foreclose competition."

CBS To Get Joost Up

American broadcast network CBS has announced it will offer programming via the Internet-based video service Joost when it officially launches—which ought to be this quarter. The announcement makes CBS the first broadcast network to sign on with Joost, although it’s not Joost’s first major partnership: the upstart Internet television service has already announced partnership with Jump TV and with CBS parent company Viacom.

“Joost combines best-in-class technology with superb video quality and a management team with a proven track record,” said Quincy Smith, president of CBS Interactive, in a release. “Partnering with Joost for the CBS Interactive Audience Network showcases our content and community on a service that allows for unique advertising opportunities and a delivery framework that maximizes cost efficiency.”

How to Send Your Wife or Girlfriend to Sweden for the Weekend

VIA just launched a contest that could be a win-win deal for anyone lucky enough to succeed. If you are like me, you have a wife or girlfriend who just doesn’t “get” gaming. Who for some strange reason thinks your hours spent on the PC in the evening protecting the world from criminals and alien invaders is just one colossal waste of time. However, she finds shows like Oprah, Dr. Phil, and The View fascinating, and they have nothing to do with protecting the planet and artistically blowing the crap out of the virtual landscape!     Well, VIA has a program for us (if we are lucky). You see they just launched the “Get the Girls into the Game” contest and you can sign up for it here www.girlzgaminghouse.com .   If you win, your significant other will be shipped kicking and screaming to Sweden where she will be put into gaming boot camp at the Home of Chrome, and have the “Girlz of Destruction” as trainers.     If things work out, she will return ready to share the gaming experience with you, and cover your back when you are in those very difficult frag fests. She may also be less inclined to ask you to step away from your PC for unimportant things like eating, sleeping, and having “conversations.”      Even if the training doesn’t hold, you’ll have a free weekend where you can play straight through for over 48 hours of destruction and mayhem. The only pauses will be to toss cans of food at the pets and kids (most pets and kids can chew through cans if they are hungry enough, and it teaches self reliance in case we ever are invaded by aliens).     To enter you only have to answer a few simple questions and then write a short essay on: “What Female Deserves the Most a Visit to the Home of Chrome and Why?   Example Submission:    If you need help, here is an example of what I think would be a wining submission:   Please take Mary into the Home of Chrome and teach her to revel in the glory of PC gaming. She is blind to the wonders of meeting interesting new people on-line and killing them only to have them rise so she can kill them again and again.      Her anger is often misdirected at trivial things like toilet seats, missed anniversaries and birthdays, and the occasional shipment of our children by FedEx to her parents. This anger needs to be directed at important things like game characters and a refrigerator with no beer in it.   She needs to improve her aim with a variety of virtual weapons and it wouldn’t hurt if her aim with household objects be aimed in a better direction as well.     For the sanctity of our marriage and safety of the Galaxy she must be brought into the light and taught the wonders of high resolution graphics and ever more powerful PCs. In this case she may be able to better understand the incredible national importance of upgrading our, now out of date, February 2006 PC with a better graphics card, faster processor, 42’ fast LCD monitor, and a sound system strong enough to blow our pets and neighbors into the next solar system.     It isn’t for myself I ask, but for her own sake. She will then be able to learn the wonders of becoming one with the game, having eyes that won’t focus beyond 3 feet, and night blindness in the middle of the day. All while developing the desire to keep the past, present, and future earth safe from evil.   I beg you to consider my plea and accept Mary into your program. By so doing, you will be sending a message to gaming husbands everywhere that hope can be found in Sweden at the Home of Chrome, and with the “Girlz of Destruction.”
