EU says electronic retail sites mislead consumers

EU says electronic retail sites mislead consumers

The European Union urged consumers on Wednesday to be wary of misleading selling tactics by online electronic goods retailers marketing items like digital cameras, game consoles, laptops and mobile phones.

EU Consumer Affairs Commissioner Meglena Kuneva said an investigation by national and EU experts had found that 55 percent of 369 Web sites checked "are letting consumers down," using dubious selling techniques that had to be changed.

She said they intentionally misled consumers over pricing, buyers’ rights and how to contact the online retailers.

Wal-Mart to sell goods from other vendors on Web

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has launched an addition to its online business that has outside retailers selling nearly 1 million new items through Walmart.com, a move that could help the world’s largest retailer catch up in the online world.

The Walmart Marketplace has products from categories that include home, baby, toys, apparel, sporting goods and sports memorabilia. The company said it picked the retailers — including eBags, CSN Stores and Pro Team — because they have large product assortments and solid customer service track records.

Teachable Moments: Top Kids’ Searches Include Sex and Porn

Teachable Moments: Top Kids

The news won’t come as a surprise to many parents or others tasked with keeping on eye on childrens’ online behavior, but Symantec’s OnlineFamily.Norton Internet filtering service has identified the top services conducted by children. Some of the results are unsurprising: kids are searching for "YouTube," "Google," "Miley Cyrus," "Taylor Swift," "Fred" (for Fred Figglehorn), eBay, Craigslist, MySpace, and Facebook. Perhaps even less surprising, "sex" and "porn" made it into the top ten kids’ search terms, landing at number four and six, respectively.

Nielsen: Young Kids Get Online in a Hurry

Nielsen: Young Kids Get Online in a Hurry

A new study (PDF) from Nielsen Online finds that young kids are getting online faster than adults or older children—in fact, since 2004 Nieslen finds young children are logging 63 percent more time online.

According to study, children aged 2 to 11 years of age comprise a whopping 9.5 percent of the online universe and account for nearly 16 million Internet users—and boys and girls are online in about equal numbers. Kids aged 2 to 11 also spent a lot more time online compared to numbers from 2004: back then, the age group only spend 7 hours a month online, but today that’s 11 hours.

EA Reinvigorates Madden, Need for Speed and Crysis for E3 2009

EA Reinvigorates Madden, Need for Speed and Crysis for E3 2009

Monday’s Electronic Arts press conference held plenty of surprises for the diehard fans of the company’s franchises, including Need for Speed, Mass Effect, and of course, Madden. Here are some of the highlights from this year’s show:

EA’s Hasbro division will continue to work on title targeting the venerate “tween” market, including Charm Club Girls (which had girls racing to tease hair the fastest in a live demo on the Wii), Littlest Pet Shop Friends and Littlest Pet Shop Online.

Dragon Age Origins will be gory. Very gory. The sheer amount of splatter in this game made quite a contrast to the above titles.

EU pushes music industry to open up online rights

EU pushes music industry to open up online rights

EU antitrust regulators told the music industry Tuesday to move quickly and change licenses that currently restrict online music stores such as iTunes from offering the same songs for sale across Europe.

Internet music downloads in Europe lag behind those in the United States, pulling in just a fraction of revenues the record industry is losing from falling CD sales.

Part of the problem in Europe is that music rights are sold separately in each country, which has prevented Apple Inc.’s iTunes from setting up a single store to service all of Europe. Instead, it has to seek licenses from each EU member state where it wishes to sell and to set up separate national stores with different music selections.

Nielsen: Mobile, Online Video Hasn’t Put A Dent in TV Viewing

Nielsen: Mobile, Online Video Hasn

Media analysis firm Nielsen has released their quarterly Three Screen Report (PDF), examining how Americans consume video on mobile devices, on their computers, and on televisions. And while folks are tapping into more video with their phones and computers, it has yet to have any kind of impact on TV viewership. Almost 99 percent of all video watched in the U.S. is still being done on televisions…and people are watching more video than ever.

Mayo Clinic Health Manager Takes Medical Records Online…for Free

Mayo Clinic Health Manager Takes Medical Records Online...for Free

Although the general public is generally warming up to the idea of conducting financial transactions and banking online—the still-growing popularity of ecommerce and online banking are testament to that fact—the idea of putting medical records online has raised more than a few eyebrows…and turned more than a few stomachs. The possible privacy implications of leaked medical records can be catastrophic: folks might find their private medical conditions and histories exposed to all the world, or find they are denied jobs, insurance, and other benefits due to discrimination. Nonetheless, industry giants like Google and Microsoft have been working on ways for individuals to securely store and control their medical records online, and selectively share information with health care providers.

Online Classifieds Boom In Recession

Online Classifieds Boom In Recession

The online classifieds market is on a high. While online advertising in general is in decline because of the recession, classifieds are growing. According to Hitwise, visits to online classified sites are up 84% over the same time in 2008.

In fact, Craigslist was the most searched term in March, beating out MySpace, which had held the title for the previous 16 months.

Heather Dougherty, Hitwise research director, said:

"Consumers have embraced free classifieds as a way to generate income by selling personal items, while others take advantage of the deals available."
