Two Russian Carriers Announce iPhone Deals

The iPhone is going to Russia: a few days ago, Russian mobile operator Vimpelcom announced it would be offering the Apple iPhone 3G for sale within Russia, and today Russian mobile operator MegaFon issued a one-line statement saying it would also be offering the iPhone during 2008.

Neither company has offered any further details on their plans, including availability dates or pricing. Vimpelcom markets mobile handsets under the brand name Beeline, and is the second-largest mobile operator in Russia with operators in neighboring countries including the Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Armenia, and Turkmenistan. MegaFon is the third-largest mobile operator in Russia. The largest Russian mobile operator, MTS, is also expected to ink a deal with Apple for the iPhone 3G.

iPhone Goes to Macao

Hutchison Telecom has become the latest international mobile operator to ink a deal with Apple to distribute the company’s now-famous iPhone: according to the South China Morning Post, it will be offering the iPhone to the city of Macao as early as next quarter.

The company joins a parade of similar announcements from mobile operators around the world, all of which have been characterized by their brevity and complete lack of detail as to what iPhone would be offered (the current 2G model or the 3G model widely expected to be unveiled in early June), or what sorts of service plans and pricing would be available. Some mobile operators are landing non-exclusive deals, meaning they may be competing with other mobile providers in their markets who can also offer the iPhone.

Vodafone to Offer iPhone in 10 Markets

International mobile operator Vodafone—which owns part of the U.S.’s Verizon Wireless—has announced that it has reached an agreement with Apple to sell the iPhone in ten international markets—including Italy, where Telecom Italia had recently been reported to have made a non-exclusive deal with Apple to sell a 3G iPhone.

In addition to Italy, Vodafone says it will offer iPhones in Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa, and Turkey. Vodafone hasn’t released any other information, including which version of the iPhone it plans to sell: the existing GSM/EDGE model, or the forthcoming 3G model.
