Sony Takes on Amazon With Cheaper Readers and eBooks

Sony Electronics has decided to amp up the electronic book competition with Amazon.com, announcing two new digital ebook readers as well as price reductions at its Sony eBook Store, all designed to lure consumers into Sony’s world and away from the runaway success of the Amazon Kindle.

"We firmly believe consumers should have choice in every aspect of their digital reading experience," said Sony Digital Reading Business Division president Steve Haber, in a statement. "Our goal is to expand the market and provide greater access to what consumers want to read when they want to read it—whether they buy, borrow, or get it for free."

Amazon Bringing Kindle Books to Phones

Amazon has had trouble dealing with demand for its Kindle ebook reader. First the company ran out of the $360 devices going into the end-of-year holiday season after an endorsement from Oprah Winfrey—creating no end of frustration—and the company has just run out of Kindles again, with the result that Amazon is now recommending customers pre-order to devices in order to, maybe, one day, get one. Amazon’s Kindle electronic reader may—or may not!—set afire the hearts of book lovers everywhere…but following a gushing endorsement in late October from none other than Oprah Winfrey—who named it her “favorite new gadget“—the Kindle’s spark has gone out until at least February. According to Amazon.com, the Kindle will be out of stock for 11 to 13 weeks, so gift-givers looking to set hands on the device in time for the holidays may have no choice but to brave second-hand sellers or risk getting gouged on eBay.

AOL, Yahoo Recap 2008 Internet Searching

AOL, Yahoo Recap 2008 Internet Searching

It’s become an annual tradition: toward the end of every year, the major Internet search engines crunch their numbers, compile their statistics, and (it sometimes seems) just make stuff up in an effort to present an overview of Internet users’ search habits for the year. Yahoo and AOL are first out of the gate this year, respectively announcing their 2008 Year in Review and 2008 Year End Hot Searches, respectively.

And what do these lists have in common? Why, that would be Britney. And a few other names you might recognize.

Oprah Kuddles the Kindle

Oprah Kuddles the Kindle

The power of Oprah Winfrey’s book recommendations is well-known: if the wildly popular talk show host and business magnate selects a title for her book club, the tome is virtually guaranteed bestseller status—even if some of the books she’s selected have led to their fair share of controversy. Oprah has decided to focus mostly on classic titles lately, but that doesn’t mean she’s turned her back on new developments: Oprah has blessed the Amazon Kindle as her “favorite new gadget”—and she’s offering her viewers a $50 discount on the device through November 1, 2008. Now, industry watchers are wondering if Oprah’s support will be enough to finally push electronic readers into the mainstream.
