So I was a little rough on the Skycharger. There are some quality green products here, though, and I think Garmin has one with its new GPS devices that come equipped with a new option called ecoRoute.

Dell To Charge Extra For XP

Dell To Charge Extra For XP

Microsoft said long ago that it would stop selling Windows XP at the end of this month. Dell replied by announcing it would continue to offer XP as an option to its customers.

Now Dell has announced that it will immediately begin charging an extra $50 to customers who want to downgrade to XP from Vista on its Vostro line. It will also charge for the downgrade on some of its XPS gaming systems.

This about-face is going to make some people look twice, especially as the company had been so adamant in the past about offering XP as a free option.

T-Mobile Unlocks iPhones in Germany

T-Mobile Unlocks iPhones in Germany

Germany’s T-Mobile has responded to complaints from competitors Vodaphone and Debitel and offer German customer an option to buy an Apple iPhone without signing a T-Mobile service contract. The price? €999, or almost $1,500 U.S. dollars.

T-Mobile is the exclusive seller of the iPhone in Germany, when the phone debuted on November 9, customers were required to sign up for two years of service (costing over €1,100 at the low end) in addition to paying €399 for the iPhone itself. Debitel filed a complaint with German telecommunications regulators that the unsubsidized iPhone could not legally be locked to a single provider; Vodafone followed up with a suit, and earlier this week got a preliminary injunction preventing T-Mobile from locking the iPhone to T-Mobile’s network.

HP to Offers SSDs in Business Notebooks

It was bound to happen sooner or later, but flash-based solid-state drives for notebook computers may be on the verge of entering the mainstream computing environment, as Hewlett-Packard confirmed it plans to offer solid-state drives as an option in notebook computers it announced earlier this month, and plans to offer the option on future models as well.

Speaking at a news conference in Taipei, HP’s Dan Forlenza said HP plans to offer 64 GB SSDs—probably from Samsung—as an option for its Compaq 2710p, 2510p, 6910p, and 8000 series notebook computers. Opting for an SSD instead of a traditional hard drive will add about $1,000 to the initial price of a notebook, although the cost differential will decline as SSDs become more common in the marketplace.

Apple Says Options Probe Totals $84 Million

Following media reports that Federal investigators were looking into allegations Apple Computer executives had knowingly falsified documents regarding favorable stock option grants awarded to employees, Apple Computer has filed its Form 10-Q and Form 10-K with the Securities and Exchange Commission, restating the company’s financial results.

As a result of its own internal investigation, Apple will take a charge of $84 million due to stock option grants made between 1997 and 2002. According to Apple, no option grants made after December 31, 2002, required any accounting adjustments. The investigation was conducted by a special committee of Apple’s Board of Director; the committee was chaired by former Vice President Al Gore.
