When Apple rolled out the iPhone internationally, it mostly made exclusive deals with single mobile carriers for individual markets, mirroring its deal with AT&T in the United States. However, as the market has matured, Apple is showing signs of ending those exclusive arrangements: today Orange UK announced it will start selling the iPhone 3G and 3GS in the United Kingdom later this year, ending 02’s exclusive deal on the iPhone that’s been in place since 2007.

Orange Tests Read&Go Kindle Clone
It looks like Amazon’s popular Kindle reader is well on its way to spawning a range of imitators. Ectaco announced its jetBook last month, and now another clone has cropped up [PDF] from French cell service provider Orange. The Read&Go will mimic the Kindle’s e-ink design, but with only a limited selection of content while in beta testing.
The Read&Go will initially carry news from five French papers: Le Monde, Le Parisien, Les Echos, L’Equipe and Télérama. Thirty e-books will also be included, from serious literature to comic compilations.
20 Pct Of French iPhones Sold Unlocked
It wasn’t trumpeted in the press, but in France you can buy an unlocked iPhone. In Germany recently, the courts overturned an injunction that had made mobile operator T-Mobile sell unlocked handsets. But Orange, which has the exclusive license with Apple for France, has been quietly and legally selling the unlocked iPhones. According to the company, about 20% of its customers have opted for the unlocked version. With a two-year contract, Orange is selling the iPhone for about $570, and almost $1100 for an unlocked version with no contract. In the fist five days on offer, Orange shifted 30,000 iPhones, 48% of them going to new customers to the network. Elsewhere, notably in the US, hackers have unlocked iPhones.
