Swiss battery maker ReVolt picks Oregon as US base

Swiss battery maker ReVolt picks Oregon as US base

A Swiss company developing zinc batteries for electric cars has chosen Portland, Ore., as its U.S. headquarters and manufacturing center.

ReVolt Technology also announced Tuesday it’s applying for $30 million in research grants from the U.S. Department of Energy to answer the government’s call for technology that drives energy independence.

ReVolt says zinc-based batteries deliver more than twice the energy of lithium-ion batteries, and they’re cheaper to produce.

The company plans to start with 75 Oregon workers and later add 175 more.

Gov. Ted Kulongoski (koo-luhn-GAH’-skee) says the state’s effort to attract "green" industry has been an effective way to create jobs.

Comcast Begins Bundling Clearwire WiMax Service

Comcast Begins Bundling Clearwire WiMax Service

Cable operator Comcast has announced its new High-Speed 2go service offering, in which it is combined WiMax mobile broadband service with its existing cable TV, Internet, or telephone services. The service is initially available in the Portland, Oregon area, but the company expects to bring Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, and other markets online before the end of 2009.

“With Comcast’s wideband Internet, we already offer one of the fastest wired connections available today. Now with the launch of High-Speed 2go, we also deliver the nation’s fastest wireless Internet,” said Comcast’s senior VP and general manager for wireless and voice services Cathy Avgiris, in a statement.

Clearwire Officially Greenlights WiMax in Atlanta

Clearwire Officially Greenlights WiMax in Atlanta

Although the rollout isn’t going as quickly as many would have hoped, Clearwire Communications has formally introduced 4G WiMax mobile broadband service to the Atlanta, Georgia area. Clearwire claims the service reaches about 3 million people over an area of about 1,200 square miles, making it the largest WiMAX service area in the United States.

The Atlanta WiMax network has been quietly operating in Atlanta for weeks, but consumers were not able to sign up for the service, which Clearwire offers under the name “Clear.” Clearwire previously rolled out WiMax services in Baltimore, Maryland, and Portland, Oregon.

Cisco and Clearwire Pact on WiMax Gear

Cisco and Clearwire Pact on WiMax Gear

Clearwire is trying to get a jump on the pending 4G mobile broadband world by rolling out high-speed WiMax technology: so far the service is up and running Baltimore and Portland, Oregon, and the company is promising more major markets will come online during 2009 with as many as 80 markets online by the end of 2010. To that end, Clearwire and Cisco have just announced a deal that will put Cisco gear at the heart of Clearwire’s core infrastructure…and Cisco plans to roll out WiMax gear for consumers, including routers under its Linksys brand.

GPS maker Garmin has taken the wraps off its new Oregon 550 and Oregon 550t GPS units, two new multipurpose GPS units designed to appear to everyone from traditional in-car GPS users to hikers and boaters as well. Plus, the 550 and 550t include a 3.2 megapixel camera, so there’s no need to cart along a separate camera to chronicle a trip…or a day hike.

Comcast Goes Wireless: Plans to Resell WiMax Services

Comcast Goes Wireless: Plans to Resell WiMax Services

Cable giant Comcast—which, incidentally, now claims to be the third largest provider of residential phone service in the U.S.—is reportedly making plans to bundle and resell WiMax mobile broadband as part of its service offerings, beginning in Portland, Oregon. According to The Oregonian, the cable company is eyeing a mid-year launch for the service, and will likely bundle it in with its existing cable television, Internet, voice, and mobile services—in theory, that could make Comcast’s service offering in the Portland area a “quintuple play,” encompassing up to five consumer services in one package (and on one bill).

Verizon Plans LTE In Two Cities for 2009

Verizon Plans LTE In Two Cities for 2009

Analog television hasn’t even been fully switched off in order to make room for new wireless services, and already Verizon Wireless has announced it plans to roll out mobile broadband services based on LTE technology in the United States beginning this year. The so-called 4G services will first launch as mobile connectivity for notebook computer users in two U.S. cities during 2009, and Verizon expects to expand that footprint to 25 to 30 U.S. cities during 2010. Verizon WIreless expects smartphones and other mobile devices using LTE technology will begin to reach U.S. consumers by 2011.

Intel to Puts $7 Bln into Factories

Intel to Puts $7 Bln into Factories

The worldwide economy might be in a sharp downturn, but chipmaker Intel is still looking to the future, announcing today it plans to invest $7 billion in its U.S. manufacturing facilities over the next two years. The most will roll out the company’s 32-nanometer technology to more facilities, enabling the company to produce more processors and semiconductor products that are smaller, faster, and use less energy.

Sony Melts Down

Sony isn’t in great shape. It just reported a mammoth $2.9 billion annual loss, the kind that typically results in some massive soul searching. The fact that Apple didn’t do that badly certainly indicates Sony could do better. This kind of financial result typically causes executives to depart, especially when Sony was forecasting a mammoth profit as late as October.

So why is Sony in the toilet, and does this mean the end of Blu-Ray, or the PlayStation 3, both of which are contributing strongly to this massive amount of red ink? Some are clearly betting PlayStation goes first.

Intel to Close Older Factories, Cut Jobs

Intel to Close Older Factories, Cut Jobs

Chipmaker Intel has announced it will be shutting down four older manufacturing plants in a move to restructure its operations. The impacted plants are assembly test facilities in Malaysia and the Philippines, as well as wafer production plants in Hillsboro, Oregon, and Santa Clara, California. Intel expects the closures will impact between 5,000 and 6,000 employees, although the company stresses they may not all leave Intel: some may be able to find positions at other manufacturing facilities.

The closures will not impact Intel’s 45- and 32-nanometer production facilities. For instance, the plant in Hillsboro, Oregon, focuses on 200nm technology. According to industry sources, the four plants have been operating at less than their full capacity for some time.
