Samsung Charges up Air Travelers, Gratis

Samsung Charges up Air Travelers, Gratis

Travelers hoofing it through LaGuardia and Orlando International Airports will find now electrical oases for their gadgets scattered throughout, courtesy of Samsung Mobile. The company announced on Wednesday that it has added dozens of charging stations to both airports, putting them in the same league as JFK, LAX and DFW, where it has already had charging stations for some time.

The towering charging stations each offer four outlets that deliver standard U.S. voltage (120 volts), along with shelves to hold electronics while they charge. Samsung installed 12 of the stations at LaGuardia’s Central Terminal Building at Gates A-D, and 18 at four of Orlando’s satellite terminals, on the second floor.

Video games and sports have always seemed like a match made in heaven, and game publisher Midway continues to mine the depths of sports gaming as the NBA playoffs enter full swing, announcing it has shipped NBA Ballers: Chosen One for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game packaging features Dwight Howard of the Orlando Heat and Al Horford of the Atlanta Hawks on the packaging, and music from artists like Jay-Z, Kanye West, Usher, Busta Rhymes, T.I., and others on the game’s instrumental score. The game is the third installment of Midway’s NBA Ballers franchise.

Google Details Health Records System

Google Details Health Records System

At a closing keynote at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMMS) conference in Orlando, Florida, Google CEO Eric Schmidt gave the first public preview of Google Health, and outlined how Google envisions the system making patients’ medical records and health information easily portable between doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, andother health care providers, while at the same time preserving patients’ privacy and enabling them to have complete control over their medical information. He also said Google Health won’t offer up ads; instead, Google wants to make money on the service by using it to drive traffic to its existing search offerings.

Earthlink Cutting Back

Earthlink Cutting Back

Internet service provider Earthlink has announced it’s going to shed 900 jobs and close four of its offices as it attempts to control operating costs.

The affected offices are will Orlando, Knoxville, Harrisburg, and San Francisco. Additionally, the company will “substantially reduce its presence” in Atlanta and Pasadena.

The company currently employs about 1,900 people, and expects the reductions to save it between $25 and $35 a year.

The major problem appears to be that potential customers want broadband rather than dial up service. Earthlink operates municipal wireless networks in four cities, and is studying those before deciding how to proceed.

mSpot Remix to Offer Wireless PC Music Sync

Mobile media application developer mSpot wants to make it easer for people to manage music on their music-capable mobile phones. Instead of fiddling with memory cards, permissions, and side-loading music onto their devices, mSpot’s new Remix aims to provide mobile users with streaming access to their PC’s music and playlists.

Disney to Set Sail with Free Pirates MMORPG

Disney to Set Sail with Free Pirates MMORPG

Disney is getting set to release the third (and presumably final) film installment of its newfound Pirates of the Caribbean franchise this May, but rather than let things slowly settle to a natural end at the bottom of the briny blue, the company is looking to extend the franchise into new media because…well, just because it’s the last movie (for now!) doesn’t mean the money-making has to end, right?

To that end, Disney Online plans to launch a new Pirates of the Caribbean massively multiplayer online role playing game this spring—but instead of putting it in a box and shipping it off to Disney-owned shelves at Disney-controlled retail outlets, the game will be available via a free download from the game Web site.

RadioShack Tunes Into MovieBeam

RadioShack Tunes Into MovieBeam

RadioShack Corporation announced today that it has begun offering MovieBeam’s set-top boxes at 1,700 retail locations in 331 mjor metropolitan areas where MovieBeam service is available.

At first glance, MovieBeam—backed by Disney, Cisco, Intel, and others—seems like a lot of other set-top box services offering on-demand, rental access to movies. And, indeed, the MovieLink boxes store up to 100 movies, and offer instant on-demand access to a frequently-updated selection of new releases and popular favorites from every major Hollywood studio. But instead of tapping into a user’s satellite, cable, or broadband Internet connection, MovieBeam downloads movies over the air using a special datacasting technology riding on airwaves alongside Public Broadcasting Systems signals. MovieBeam typically offers 100 movies at a time—all downloaded and stored locally on users’ systems for instant access—with 10 new titles delivered every week, including some high-definition selections.

Cingular Brings 3G Network to Orlando

The new 3G service will be available in the Orlando metropolitan area including the airport, theme parks, and the University of Central Florida.

"Our 3G service gives them the ability to watch their favorite sports and shows on their phone while waiting in line to grab a seat at a restaurant. We’re providing customers with an "invisible wire" that extends their broadband experience beyond their office or home."

HP + Voodoo: The Back Story

Whenever there is a merger like this, many of us get interested in the back story. I was able to speak to executives from both firms and an interesting story emerged on why they want to do this.

For HP: Margin, Leadership, Advocacy, and Image

The performance gaming market is unique, while the regular PC market is largely commoditized now with razor thin margins. The performance side enjoys much stronger margins more in line with where the industry was 5 or more years ago. This is largely because the vendors in this industry tend to be closer to their customers and these customers value the extra care and unique offerings to a degree that they are willing to pay more for them.
