Google’s Street View seems like a great idea—give users of its Google maps product a street-level view of a location so they can more easily find their way around. But the service has engendered all manners of privacy complaints, particularly from individuals who claim they can be identified from photos appearing on the service. The latest brouhaha is in Japan, where Google has quietly announced it will reshoot all photographs used in its Street View mapping service using lower camera angles. Google will lower the cameras on its imaging vehicles by 40 cm (about 16 inches) after numerous complaints they were invading citizens’ privacy by shooting impacts over the fences of private homes.

Matsushita Changing Name to Panasonic
In a move which may mark the end of an era in the electronics industry, Japan’s Matsushita has announced it will change the name of the company away from that of its famous founder and instead adopt the name of its most well-known global brand: Panasonic.
Matsushita was founded in 1918, Matsushita was one of the major Japanese businesses to take the global stage after World War II, with founder Konosuke Matsushita embodying one of the rags-to-riches stories of the 20th century: sent to work in Osaka by his family at a young age, and started his company at the age of 23 on the basis of a new light socket he designed. His humanitarian ideals and management style have often been cited as central tenets of the company.
Sharp and Toshiba Team up on Flat Panels
Despite fierce competition on the surface of the flat panel television market, under the all the brand names and marketing, many manufacturers actually share the same parts in their televisions. Toshiba and Sharp, already allies in the flat panel business, strengthened their agreement on Friday with a deal that will allow Toshiba to buy large LCD panels directly from Sharp.
According to BusinessWeek, The panels will come from Sharp’s new $3.4-billion factory in Osaka Prefecture, Japan. In exchange, Toshiba will supply Sharp with image-processing chips. Both companies hope the agreement will allow them to focus on their respective specialties and work cooperatively.
Sega Neo Geo Controller For PS2
“Sega Logistics Service (Headquarters: Ohta, Tokyo) announced on the 22nd that they would reissue the “Neo Geo Stick 2″ controller, a “Neo Geo” console-like controller for the Playstation 2. Sales will be conducted online, at electronics vendors, and local shops. The price is 6,090 yen (including tax). It will be released on February 17th, 2005.
This product is to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the release of SNK Playmore’s (Headquarters: Suita, Osaka) “The King of Fighters” series of fighting games. It is being reissued in cooperation with Sega Logistics, SNK Playmore, and Exar (Headquarters: Shibuya, Tokyo).”
Matsushita Sues LG Over Plasma Patent
“Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. filed the lawsuit in Tokyo District Court against LG Electronics Inc. and a similar request with Japanese customs authorities on Monday, company spokesman Yoshihiro Kitadeya said from Osaka, where Matsushita is based.
Mr. Kitadeya said Matsushita has been in talks for a year, demanding that South Korea’s LG Electronics pay royalties on two patents he says are being violated in LG’s plasma display panels, or PDPs. No agreement was reached.”
This is the second suit of this type to hit Japan in a year. Samsung has already been sued by Fujitsu in Japan because of patent infringement. The plasma monitor market is definitely heating up and competition gets fiercer and TV prices continue to plummet.
Panasonic Preps First Blu-ray Recorder
Matsushita Electric Industrial, better known by its Panasonic brand name, will unveil its first Blu-ray Disc recorder next week, the Osaka, Japan-based company says.
The new machine is being launched to capture consumer demand for recording of high-definition television coverage of this year’s Olympic Games, which begin on August 11, Matsushita says. The new recorder will be unveiled on June 30 in Tokyo.
Japanese public broadcaster NHK (Nippon Hoso Kyokai) is planning extensive coverage of the Olympics including 280 hours of live and recorded coverage in high definition via digital satellite.

Panasonic Offers Blu-Ray Verification
Anticipating a wave of entries of Blu-ray Disc-based products in the coming months, Panasonic has established a laboratory in Osaka to facilitate companies adopting the format and entering the market.
The Blu-ray Disc Founders, which will be re-incorporated into the Blu-ray Disc Association later this year, developed a format to enable rewriting, recording and playback of high-definition TV (HDTV) and other digital content by using a blue laser. The Founders published the basic specifications, Specification Ver.1.0, on May 20, 2002. The laboratory verifies conformity with the specification, covering single layer discs (23.3 gigabytes or 25.0 gigabytes), dual layer discs (50.0 gigabytes) and the recorders which record and playback these discs.
