Ad Group Opposes Yahoo-Google Deal

This Association of National Advertisers (ANA) has some very big players, with companies like Disney, P&G and Kellogg’s on its board. It spends over $100 million each year in commercial advertising and marketing. And it’s not happy about the Yahoo-Google ad deal.

It’s so unhappy, in fact, that it announced on Sunday that it had sent a letter to the Department of Justice opposing the deal. The ANA says this move was taken after “comprehensive, independent analysis,” including face-to-face talks with Yahoo and Google and input from the board’s members.

In a statement, the ANA said:

Fujitsu Recalls 287,000 Sony-made Batteries

After announcing last week that it would participate in Sony’s global battery replacement program for notebook batteries, Japan’s Fujitsu announced today that was recalling 287,000 Sony-made made batteries used in the company’s notebook computers. Combined with recalls from Dell, Apple, Toshiba, and Lenovo, the number of recalled Sony-made notebook batteries has climbed to over 7.5 million.

The batter recall is another blow to electronics giant Sony, which has suffered a series of technical and public relations blows this year, including repeated delays on its forthcoming Playstation 3 gaming console, a format war between Sony-backed Blu-Ray and HD DVD next-generation DVD disks, a legal and privacy furor over copy protection software clandestinely included in Sony BMG music CDs. Sony’s share price has declined more than 10 percent since the laptop battery problem emerged in August 2006.

P2P Still Rules the Download Scene

It could all come down to the Supreme Court ruling in the MGM vs. Grokster case that determines whether digital downloads will cease to exist or not. According to NPD, P2P (peer-to-peer) downloads are still ruling the net despite increased interest by users in the pay-to download market. To give you an idea of just how skewed the landscape really is, in March of 2005 243 million songs were downloaded from P2P services compared to only 26 million songs that were actually purchased online. But things could be changing.
