During the company’s conference call to discuss third quarter financial results, Acer president Gianfranco Lanci said the newly-acquired computer maker Gateway will launch a new complete line of notebook computers during the first quarter of 2008 in an effort to rejuvenate its business. According to Lanci, Gateway sells mainly desktop systems in the United States, and needs to better address the faster-growing notebook market segment. However, Gateways’s product lineup won’t be changing before the first quarter, since the companies still have to complete their integration, then work on getting new products into retail and distribution channels.

Gateway to Buy Packard Bell
In a move that comes as no surprise to the industry, computer maker Gateway announced today that it plans to acquire all the shares of Packard Bell controlled by former eMachines founder Lap Shun (John) Hui, although the financial terms of the transaction weren’t disclosed. Hui controls a 75 percent interest in PB Holding, which is the parent company of Packard Bell B.V., a PC maker whose name has all but vanished from the North American market but remains a force in Europe.
Lenovo Makes Bid for Packard Bell
Current number three computer maker Lenovo has announced it plans to buy Packard Bell, saying it has entered into a memorandum of understanding with an independent third party to buy the European computer maker. Lenovo has reportedly been competing with Taiwan’s Acer to buy the firm; the two companies have been competing fiercely to increase their share of the global PC marketplace, where they currently tussle for third place behind Hewlett-Packard and Dell.
HP’s Garage Gets Historical Listing
The Palo Alto garage where Bill Hewlett and Date Packard set up shop in 1938—and founded Hewlett-Packard—has been officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The state of California named the side a Registered Landmark in 1987.
“The HP Garage has become a symbol of what can rise from humble beginnings with hard work and determination,” said Gary Elliott, HP’s VP of Brand Management and Design. “It’s an honor to be recognized by the National Park Service and we hope it will further spread these core HP values to a national audience.”
Dell PC Sales Back On Top
While Dell and Hewlett-Packard, the world’s two largest PC makers, have traded the top spot since HP completed its merger with Compaq Computer in May 2002, the past quarter changed that equation.
The latest market share figures reveal that Dell was able to capture a good part of the increase in business spending on PCs. The company also grew faster in Asia and Europe, a traditional HP stronghold. Overall, Dell shipped over 1 million more units than HP–a bigger gap than in previous quarters.
