The company also said an additional 6,400 workers, or 2 percent of HP’s 321,000-employee work force, will lose their jobs over the next year as part of HP’s digestion of Electronic Data Systems, a technology services provider HP bought for $13.9 billion last year to mount a bigger challenge to IBM Corp.

HP was already dumping 24,600 jobs as part of that acquisition before the extra cuts were announced Tuesday.

HP’s results, reported Tuesday after the market closed, muddies the picture of whether technology spending has fallen as far as it’s going to in this recession. HP’s outlook was not optimistic, and its shares fell in extended trading.

Another 6,400 workers to lose jobs at HP

Palo Alto, Calif.-based HP was already dumping 24,600 workers as part of that acquisition before announcing the extra cuts Tuesday.

The announcement came in a conference call with analysts to discuss HP’s fiscal second-quarter results.

HP’s profit dropped 17 percent to $1.72 billion, while sales fell 3 percent to $27.4 billion, in the latest period.

Facebook Users Protest Breastfeeding Policy

Legislation may have cleared the way for women to breastfeed in public in the vast majority of U.S. states, but on the wild wild west of the Internet, Facebook remains forbidden territory for pictures of the natural deed. The company’s long-standing policy of removing breastfeeding photos has been drawing steady opposition, though, resulting in real-life and virtual protests last week from women who demand the right to bare all with baby on the Web.

Living With the HTC Diamond: Closer but Not Yet an iPhone Killer

This last week I’ve been traveling throughout Japan and switching between the HTC Advantage I normally carry and the new HTC Touch Diamond that recently was released in Europe and will soon come to the US. Overall I’m impressed with this phone, but have realized that for me a touchscreen phone that doesn’t have a keyboard for email is simply too painful to use whether it is this new HTC product or the ever-popular Apple iPhone.

Microsoft Buys Phone Maker Danger

Microsoft is leaning more heavily into the mobile industry, announcing today it is acquiring mobile phone maker Danger Inc. In addition to developing the fad-creating Sidekick phone for T-Mobile, the Palo Alto-based Danger develops a mobile platform that combines mobile messaging, Web browsing, social networking, entertainment, and personal information management; Microsoft will work to integrate these services with its existing mobile solutions to create “industry-leading” mobile entertainment and communications technologies. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

HP’s Garage Gets Historical Listing

The Palo Alto garage where Bill Hewlett and Date Packard set up shop in 1938—and founded Hewlett-Packard—has been officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The state of California named the side a Registered Landmark in 1987.

“The HP Garage has become a symbol of what can rise from humble beginnings with hard work and determination,” said Gary Elliott, HP’s VP of Brand Management and Design. “It’s an honor to be recognized by the National Park Service and we hope it will further spread these core HP values to a national audience.”

Analysts Expect HP Printer Spinoff

“The end of Fiorina’s nearly six-year reign as chairman and chief executive of Hewlett-Packard was a signal to some analysts the company’s board might be ready to shake up the business model and energize its sagging stock price. Rumors floating around since the summer that the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company is mulling a divestiture have now gained credence.”

In a conference call, HP’s board denied the idea of splitting of its printer and imaging business from the personal computer and server operations. But analysts are predicting the spin-off anyways, arguing Fiorina’s departure makes it more likely.

Gateway Shoots Back At HP in Patent Feud

The filing is the latest shot in a legal tussle that began in March, when Hewlett-Packard Co., of Palo Alto, Calif., filed suit against Gateway Inc., claiming that the PC maker was refusing to pay licensing fees on six designs patented by HP. The patents covered such features as laptop hinges, cursors and a keyboard that requires a password.

Gateway, of Poway, Calif., sued HP in May over five patents related to multimedia features. Now, both companies also have asked the ITC to get involved. HP filed a similar claim in May, asking that Gateway be banned from importing computers and components that allegedly violate seven of HP’s patents.
