More Exploding iPhones Reported

An 80-year-old man from Paris is the latest to report a dangerous problem with his iPhone – in this case, a screen that cracked before his eyes.

"I took it out of my pocket and held it to my ear and saw the screen crack up like a car windscreen," Rolland Caufman told AFP.

There have been several similar incidents, including one where a man claims a shard from the screen hit his eye when it broke up. And all this has prompted an investigation by French consumer watchdog DGCCRF, which said:

Global Job Cuts At MySpace?

Global Job Cuts At MySpace?

According to reports in the Guardian, MySpace is considering shutting down its offices in San Francisco, Italy, France and Spain. If this happens, and it could possibly occur as early as this week, hundreds of jobs will be lost.

The office in San Francisco is home to 200 employees and only opened at the end of 2007. It’s believed some workers would be given the chance to relocate to MySpace HQ in Los Angeles.

Pandemic Hijacks Nazi Hijinks in The Saboteur

Pandemic Hijacks Nazi Hijinks in The Saboteur

We hadn’t heard much about Pandemic Studios’ gritty WWII-themed action title, The Saboteur, even in last week’s crop of rumors for E3, but that only made the sweet little demo we caught at Monday’s EA press conference all the better a surprise. This one’s shaping up nicely.

Players step into the shoes of Sean Devlin, a civilian mechanic in Nazi-occupied France who plays his role in the resistance by sabotaging the Nazi war effort every way he can. In the case of the particular gameplay demo saw, blowing up a fuel depot.

eBay Wins Counterfeit Court Victory

eBay Wins Counterfeit Court Victory

After losing a pair of high profile counterfeit cases and being stung with millions in fines, the tide appears to have turned for eBay in court. Yesterday it won a famous victory in France, where it had been sued by cosmetics maker L’Oreal over fake perfumes sold on the auction site.

A Paris court judged eBay not responsible for counterfeits sold by users, even though L’Oreal said it believed up to 60% of perfumes sold as luxury brands on eBay were fakes. The court decided eBay had lived up to its obligations, and urged the two sides to use mediation to resolve the issue.

Asus U, UX Series Notebooks Mimic Parisian Nightfall with LEDs

Though Asus’ high-powered Lamborghini VX5 laptop and sleek new Eee 1008HA may have stolen most of the thunder at Asus’ CeBIT press conference, the company has also been at work on less crowd-stealing endeavors. The recently announced U and UX series notebooks sport ultra-thin designs and unique lighting schemes for the style-conscious.

Both notebooks will have LED-backlit keyboards which automatically adjust to glow in the dark beneath the chiclet-style keys, plus touch pads that will actually light up beneath your fingers, following them around the pad. In its own hyperbolic language, Asus claims these features make the notebooks, “reminiscent of the streets of Paris with the evening fast approaching.”

Netgear Pushes YouTube into Living Rooms

Netgear Pushes YouTube into Living Rooms

If you’ve ever hovered around a friend’s computer watching a compilation of Swedish black metal videos, dogs skateboarding, or motorcycle crashes, chances are you’re a YouTube addict – and you’ve probably yearned for the day you can comfortably watch it from a recliner instead. A number of companies have set their sights on the burgeoning Internet-on-TV market, and Netgear hopes to take the crown this year with its own Internet TV Player.

AOL, Yahoo Recap 2008 Internet Searching

AOL, Yahoo Recap 2008 Internet Searching

It’s become an annual tradition: toward the end of every year, the major Internet search engines crunch their numbers, compile their statistics, and (it sometimes seems) just make stuff up in an effort to present an overview of Internet users’ search habits for the year. Yahoo and AOL are first out of the gate this year, respectively announcing their 2008 Year in Review and 2008 Year End Hot Searches, respectively.

And what do these lists have in common? Why, that would be Britney. And a few other names you might recognize.

Lenovo Expands IdeaPad Notebook Line

Lenovo Expands IdeaPad Notebook Line

Lenovo has rolled out four new notebooks in its IdeaPad line of consumer notebooks, adding size choices and (dare we say it?) color choices to Lenovo’s famously staid lineup. Along with colors—orange, black, red, and blue—Lenovo is also rolling forward with facial recognition as a login system, along with offering HDMI and optional Blu-ray drives.

“From San Francisco to Paris to Singapore, customer feedback on our inaugural IdeaPad notebooks has been exceptional,” said Lenovo Americas VP Stephen DiFranco, in a statement. “Our new styles, colors, and innovations are all about customers and the ways they express themselves and their ideas.”

ICANN Opens the Door for New Domain Endings

ICANN Opens the Door for New Domain Endings

If your domain name of choice has been already been soaked up in every ending from .com to .tk, fear not: a new move by the organization responsible for registering domains may soon open up a limitless supply of new endings. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) decided Thursday that it will create new guidelines to streamline the addition of new domains in the coming years.

ICANN announced its decision at the conclusion of a week of meetings held in Paris. Although the plan still needs approval from a board before new domains can begin to crop up, ICANN foresees a slew of specialized new endings, from .travel to .nyc, growing from the new guidelines.
