Palo Alto, Calif.-based HP was already dumping 24,600 workers as part of that acquisition before announcing the extra cuts Tuesday.

The announcement came in a conference call with analysts to discuss HP’s fiscal second-quarter results.

HP’s profit dropped 17 percent to $1.72 billion, while sales fell 3 percent to $27.4 billion, in the latest period.

Estonian Fined For Cyber Attack

Last April and May a series of service attacks against Estonian government sites almost brought the small Baltic nation to a standstill. There was a belief that Russia was behind it all, in the wakeof Estonia removing a Soviet war memorial from its capital, and Nato was called in to investigate.   The real reason proved to be less sinister. The hackers were based in Estonia itself, and oneof them, Dmitri Galushkevich, was fined $1650 for his part in the cyber attacks, according to the BBC.   Galushkevich is one of about 375,000 ethnic Russiansin the country of 1.3 million, and prosecutors asserted that the student took part in the cyber attacks as a protest against Prime Minister Andrus Ansip.   The denial of service attacks hit thesite of Andrus’s political party, government agencies, other political parties and even newspapers, and were part of a bigger picture including rioting where one person was killed.  Galushkevich admitted his part in the organized hacking.   "In deciding the verdict, the court took into account the fact that he had no criminal record," Gerrit Maesalu, spokesman forthe regional prosecutor’s office in north-east Estonia, told AFP.   At the time of the attacks, Estonia blamed Russia and described the attacks as a“cyber war.”

New UK Law Hits Encrypted Data

A new law has come into force in the UK that can virtually obliterate online and mobile privacy.   Under new provisions in Part III of the Regulation of Investigative Powers Act 2000 (RIPA), people who encrypt data must hand over the encryption key to police if they’re asked, or make the data intelligible.   That provision was in the original act, but at the time so little data was encrypted that it was never activated – until now. Refusal to comply can bring a jail sentence of between two and five years, the longer term occurring if the refusal is part of a terrorism investigation.   Additionally, telecoms companies now have to keep a log of all voice and text messages sent and received for the next year, as of October 1.   Although the government has given assurances that the powers will only be invoked when necessary, and that the act complies with the European Convention on Human Rights, and that anyone who objects to a request can take it to the Investigatory Powers Tribunal.   A Home Office spokesman told vnunet.com,   “The measures in Part III are intended to ensure that the ability of public authorities to protect the public and the effectiveness of their other statutory powers are not undermined by the use of technologies to protect electronic information."   Unsurprisingly, civil libertarians have criticized the provision, not only as an infringement on privacy, but that it will probably have little effect.

Dell Mulling Move into Retail Channels?

In a leaked internal memo, recently re-installed CEO Michael Dell indicated that his namesake computer company may be considering entering the traditional retail channel as a way to boslter its declining market share. According to Reuters, the memo reads in part: “The Direct Model has been a revolution, but is not a religion.”

The memo did not state whether Dell would seek to sell computers through its own branded retail stores—a strategy employed successfully by Apple&mdahs;or seek to enter into existing consumer electronics outlets like Best Buy, Frys, and Circuit City.

Music Co.’s Subpoenaed Over Digital Prices

New York State Attorney General’s office has subpoenaed several major music companies as part of a preliminary investigation into whether digital music download services have engaged in illegal price-fixing activity.

The attorney general’s office is reportedly seeking information on the wholesale prices music labels charge digital download servers like Apple’s iTunes, RealNetworks’’s Rhapsody, the reformed Napster, Yahoo Music, MSN Music, and others. The action is preliminary; even if evidence of price-fixing is found, spokespersons for the attorney general’s office indicate a formal investigation wouldn’t be launched for several months.

More CES 2005 Coverage

Quote from the CES Unveiled Part 2 article:

“Welcome to part two of our 2005 CES coverage. In our part one coverage of this fantastic show, we featured products which fell into three basic categories: displays, media devices such as Media Center PC’s and streaming media devices, and IPTV based products, not to mention a few products which simply stood out among others. Part two has a very strong showing of home audio products as well as a few miscellaneous products which were just too cool not to show off.”

Pioneer Voyager 4000 Dual-Tuner HD-DVR

It appears that the Voyager 4000 is not available to the general public (yet), but will be offered as part of a Cable company’s set-top box product line. What caught our attention is that the Voyager 4000, although it is not designed to be attached to a home network, can in theory transfer HD-quality MPEG-2 video from its hard drive to any PC via its dual IEEE 1394 (FireWire) ports. But the not-so-nice folks at Pioneer have integrated Macrovision, HDCP, and 5C copy protection so it might be a challenge to actually playback the content once it’s on the PC.

The Tech Lounge: Beyond Megapixels

Quote from the article at The Tech Lounge:

“This is the first of a three part series of editorial articles examining current digital photography hardware, as well as the author’s views of what is to come. Keep in mind that as this is an editorial, it does contain some opinion and bias, but I have attempted to be as fair and objective as possible.”

Chaintech FX71 5600 Ultra video card review

Quote from the review at ipKonfig:

“NVIDIA’s GeForce FX chipset has been, for the most part, well accepted in the gaming community, a fine achievement on NVIDIA’s part. Its latest graphics processor introduces newer features for better game play. Using 0.13u process technology, the FX chipset provides significant speed increases. . . . This card in particular is very attractive, in part due to Chaintech’s designers. You’ll find that most of its products exhibit very nice cosmetic designs. The Chaintech FX71 5600 Ultra video card has a functional purpose behind its sexy looks, too. The enclosed design was designed to produce better cooling for today’s demanding graphic processors. By using Gas Turbine Technology (GT), it can average around 10-15°C better cooling than other standard methods. The Gas Turbine technology works in the same way, for the most part, as an airplane engine.”
