10 Updates For Patch Tuesday

10 Updates For Patch Tuesday

There will be a total of 10 security updates tomorrow for Microsoft’s monthly Patch Tuesday, the company has said in its security bulletin.

Three vulnerabilities in Windows (affecting Windows 2000, XP, XP Professional edition, Vista, Server 2003 and Server 2008, Office 2000, 2003, 2007 and XP, and Microsoft Office 2004 and 2008 for the Mac) could let attackers elevate privileges, while another moderate vulnerability in Windows could enable information disclosure.

Other patches cover Office Excel Viewer; Office Word Viewer; Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats; Works 8.5 and 9.0; and Office SharePoint Server.

IE And Firefox Get Patches

IE And Firefox Get Patches

As promised, Microsoft issued an emergency patch yesterday for the exploitable hole in all versions of the Internet Explorer browser. At the same time, Mozilla came out with a patch that covers eight security problems in Firefox 2 and 3 – the last time there will be a patch for Firefox 2, as security support for that version ends. The company is urging users to upgrade to Firefox 3.

There will also no longer be anti-phishing protection for Firefox 2 as Google has dropped support for that version’s phishing blacklist.

DNS Security Patch Released

A security patch has been released for a dangerous error we didn’t even known existed.

The BBC reports that about six months ago security expert Dan Kaminsky discovered an error in the Domain Name System (DNS), under which criminals could redirect people to fake web pages, even if they’d typed the correct name.

The DNS converts the words typed into a numerical address that’s used to route all Internet traffic.

Exploiting an error like that would make phishing scams simple – people would think they were at their bank website and happily type in personal details, which the criminals could then harvest.

Microsoft Reissues Security Patch

Microsoft has been forced to re-release a security patch issued on this month’s Patch Tuesday, but which proved to be not all everyone hoped. The patch was supposed to cover remote code execution vulnerability in Vista and XP, and had been rated “critical” by the company.

However, although the patch covered the flaw in Vista, it didn’t give a fix for XP. That has now been addressed, according to Christopher Budd, Microsoft security and response communications lead.

U.S. Hits Four With Anti-Spam Charges

U.S. agents have raided a Detroit-area operation accused of sending out millions of e-mail advertisements for a fraudulent weight-loss patch, the Federal Trade Commission said.

Daniel Lin, Mark Sadek, James Lin and Christopher Chung could face up to five years in jail under a new anti-spam law that took effect in January. They also face mail-fraud charges, which carry a maximum 20-year sentence.

Through their company, Phoenix Avatar, the four defendants earned nearly $100,000 per month selling a diet patch that had no effect at all, the FTC charged.

TRON 2.0 patch clarification

Quote from the article at Blues News:

“The 19 MB update is the patch released last week (story) for WinXP, reworked to address some issues with the original patch. The file is available from the TRON Downloads Page and mirrored on 3D Gamers, and since it is not multiplayer compatible with the earlier one, all users are encouraged to upgrade. Meanwhile, since this patch is, surprisingly, for WinXP only, a version that’s unofficially repackaged to work under other versions of Windows is available from TRON 2.0 Files, likewise mirrored on 3D Gamers. “
