P.I.s In HP Spying Scandal Fined

In 2006 Newsweek revealed that Hewlett-Packard chairperson Patricia Dunn had hired private detectives to find the source of a boardroom leak. Now the four private detectives who undertook that investigation have been fined a total of $600,000 for their illegal tactics.

They used a technique known as pretexting in order to obtain the phone records of a number of journalists and board members. Pretexting involves deceiving the phone companies into believing that the record request actually comes from the bill payer concerned, which violates the 1996 Telecommunications Act.

Hewlett-Packard is still working to put 2006’s spying scandal behind them, announcing that it has reached a settlement with four journalists over allegations the company engaged in corporate espionage to ferret out a leak in its board room.

Hewlett-Packard has already paid a $14.5 million settlement in the affair, although the company admitted no wrongdoing over allegations investigators in its employ used “pretexting”—essentially, social engineering—to obtain private phone records of board members and journalists as it tried to stop leaks to the press.

HP Teases New Digital Entertainment Centers

Amidst an ethnical controversy which has already seen the resignation of board chairwoman Patricia Dunn, HP is showcasing two new Windows-based digital entertainment centers at the . trade show in Denver. The HP z565 and z560 are Windows Media Center-based media systems which offer DVR capabilities, HDMI output, a progressive scan DVD player, a 9-in-1 media card reader, and 800 GB of storage for recorded TV, home movies, photos, and other media. The new systems also feature fixed-line audio output (to help integrators and home theater installation specialists integrate the systems with existing theater setups and home media management systems) and will ship as Life|ware Ready® status, meaning its compatible with home and media management technology from Exceptional Innovation of Columbus, Ohio.
