PC Shipments Climbed at End of 2007

Growth in the personal computer market proved to be strong in the final quarter of 2007, according to new figures from market analysis firms Gartner and IDC. Although the companies use slightly different methods to quantify sales—and come up with somewhat different numbers—both agree growth was well in the double-digit range, with Gartner calculating a 13.4 percent increase for the quarter, and IDC finding 15.5 percent growth. And both firms agree a resurgent Dell has reclaimed its top spot for sales in the United States, although rival Hewlett Packard maintained its top position in worldwide PC sales.

Worldwide PC Shipments Up 12.5 Pct in Q2

Market analysis firm IDC reports that worldwide PC shipments increased by 12.5 percent during the second quarter of 2007, with the Asia Pacific region (sans Japan) leading the way with a brisk 20 percent increase in sales volume compared to the second quarter of 2006. The United States market also say a respectable 7.2 percent growth in sales, and the overall sales increases seem to be benefiting every computer maker…except, that is, for Dell, which continued to see its overall sales volume decline.

By 2011, Notebooks Will Rule Computing

A new market research report from IDC forecasts that laptop and notebook computers will account for half off all PCs worldwide by the year 2011.

IDC forecasts that overall computer unit sales will continue to increase, with sales of desktop systems continuing to grow through at least 2011. However, laptop and notebook sales will grow faster, with a compound annual growth rate forecast at 16.1 percent, compared to just 3.8 percent growth for desktop systems over the same period.

PC Market Approaches 11% Growth

Total shipments rose 10.9% year on year in the first quarter to 46.1 million, roughly 1% above forecast. Continued growth in EMEA and in portable PCs were the primary drivers.

“First quarter results demonstrate that demand remains healthy going into the new year,” said Loren Loverde, director of IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. “Although the market is expected to slow later this year, demand for portables, system replacements, and growth in emerging geographies continue to drive expansion.”

Near-Term PC Sales Slow Down

“The updated forecast from IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker lowers the growth in global PC shipments for 2005 from 10.1 percent to 9.7 percent. The good news, according to IDC, is that demand islikely to shift into later years and the growth forecast remains above 8 percent through the end of 2009. Total shipments are expected to reach 195.4 million in 2005 with total shipment value growingby 5.3 percent to $209 billion.

Shipments are projected to reach 273 million in 2009 with a value of $245 billion.”

IDC Expects PC Market to Grow 10% in 2005

While growth in worldwide consumer PC shipments slipped to less than 8% in the third quarter of 2004 from a peak of over 25% a year ago, growth in commercial shipments of 15.9% was down only onepercent from a four and one half year high of 16.9% in the first half of 2004, and was up from 13.5% a year ago. Commercial growth is expected to slow in 2005 as the recent recovery matures, butshould remain at a relatively robust 11.3% vs. projected consumer growth of only 8%. Total shipments are expected to reach 195.1 million in 2005 on growth of 10.1%, with total shipment value growingby 3.9% to $201 billion.

PC Market Strong On European Demand

From IDC’s press release:

Strong demand in Europe as well as better than expected results in Canada and Latin America boosted shipments to 39.7 million, roughly 1-2% ahead of forecast. Aggressive prices continue to fuel both consumer and commercial replacements, particularly for desktop systems. While portable growth remains strong, demand shifted toward desktops during the second quarter.

“Demand in Europe, supported by the strong Euro and aggressive promotions, was the biggest driver of the quarter,” said Loren Loverde, director of IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. “Consumer demand and commercial replacements seem fairly steady across the major regions with growth slightly slower than expected in Asia, and faster in Europe, Canada and Latin America. Overall growth remains solid and strength in Europe bodes well for the second half of the year.”

HP Ranks First In Latest PC Sales Figures

HP slightly edged out Dell for the most PC shipments in Q4 2003, but Dell held on to the top spot for the year-end totals.

From IDC’s press release:

Competition in the PC market remained fierce during the fourth quarter of 2003 as notebook adoption continued and consumers reacted to falling prices. Worldwide PC shipments were in line with forecasts, growing 15.2% year-on-year to 44.6 million units, according to IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. Commercial demand showed some signs of recovery and consumers remained active during the holiday season. Strong growth in Europe and sustained notebook demand were key sources of growth, although limited supply of flat panel displays constrained shipments for some vendors. On an annual basis, shipment growth moved into double digits for the first time since 2000, boosting shipments to a record 152.6 million on growth of 11.4%.

PC Shipments Projected To Set Record

IDC’s updated forecast projects that strong demand from the consumer segment, aggressive pricing, and rapid portable adoption will continue to drive worldwide PC growth in the fourth quarter of 2003and into 2004. Strong third quarter results and projected growth of 15.3% in the fourth quarter are expected to boost annual growth of worldwide PC shipments to 11.4%, an increase from prior growthprojections of 8.4% according to IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. Total shipments in 2003 are now expected to surpass 152 million with value flat at just over $175 billion. The updatedprojections represent shipment growth of 8.8% over 2000, the previous highest year for PC shipments, with a 22% decline in total value due to aggressive pricing and a shift toward lower-endconfigurations as overall computing power increases. Shipment growth is expected to continue at 11.4% in 2004, up from prior expectations of 10.2%, while shipment value is forecast to grow by 4% in2004.

“Following a surge in demand during the third quarter, and supported by an improving economic environment, we expect significant growth in the fourth quarter”, said Loren Loverde, director of IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. “Consumers remain the primary market driver, and while business purchases have yet to accelerate substantially, overall growth shows the market in mid recovery. We expect greater business participation and continued double-digit growth during 2004.”
