Sharp Zaurus SL-C3000 Review

It’s been a while since we’ve seen any innovation in the PDA scene, especially since Sony stopped selling their Clie line. With the PDA market seemingly shrinking and stagnating, Sharp has released a new versatile PDA that may change what the definition of a PDA is.

The Zaurus SL-C3000 is the latest in the line of Linux-based PDAs from Sharp. What distinguishes the Zaurus from other popular PDAs is the use of Linux as the core operating system. This allows the Zaurus to have a stable, tried and true operating system with a lot of flexibility and extensibility. In addition, Sharp packs the Zaurus SL-C3000 with the best of technologies to create a very unique product.

PDA Sales Increase Sharply

“Worldwide PDA sales during the first quarter totaled 3.4 million units, compared to sales of 2.7 million during the same period last year, Gartner says. The 25-percent gain in shipments was the largest ever percentage gain for PDA sales during the first quarter, it says, noting that it did not count sales of smart phones, such as PalmOne’s Treo 650.

At the same time, the average selling price of PDAs rose by 15 percent to $406, the highest since Gartner began tracking PDA prices in 2000, it says.

Choosing a Personal Digital Assistant

Quote from the article:

“In the early days, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) were not much more than glorified calculators with the ability to store contact information and brief notes. Now, the line between personal computer and personal digital assistant is blurred thanks to the advanced capabilities of these useful little devices. There are plenty of makes and models to choose from in the PDA market, and finding the right model to suit an individual’s needs can be a dizzying challenge. Digit-Life’s Take On Handhelds

Quote from the article:

“The last year 2004 can be called a crucial point in the world of handhelds. The time of revolutionary changes, full of surprises for users of mobile devices. Let’s look back at the most important events of the last year and evaluate prospects awaiting us in future.

Windows CE Surpassed Palm OS Shipments

Worldwide personal digital assistant (PDA) shipments exceeded 2.8 million units, as Microsoft Windows CE operating system licensees surpassed the Palm OS for the first time in the third quarter of2004, according to Gartner, Inc.

The Microsoft Windows CE operating system accounted for 48.1 percent of worldwide PDA shipments in third quarter of 2004. Palm OS units represented 29.8 percent of the market, down from 46.9 percent market share in the same period last year (see Table 1).

PDA Shipments Return To Growth

Worldwide personal digital assistant (PDA) shipments totaled 2.75 million units in the second quarter of 2004, a 12 percent increase from the second quarter of 2003, according to preliminary resultsby Gartner, Inc. The year-over-year growth rate broke a string of 10 consecutive quarterly shipment declines.

The industry’s growth is largely attributed to the significant increase in Research in Motion’s (RIM’s) BlackBerry shipments. RIM’s shipments increased 289 percent in the second quarter of 2004 (see Table 1). The company’s success was driven by the BlackBerry’s e-mail capabilities, as well as a growing number of third-party applications and wireless data services that are becoming available to BlackBerry users.

Tapwave Zodiac Review

Usually equipped with a better processor, more memory, more storage, and 16-bit full color screens, the modern PDA has allowed adults to play games that are more complex and sophisticated. So is the market ready for a hardware platform that is more advanced than previously available and designed for the adult gamer? Tapwave believes so. ”

O2 Xphone Smartphone Review

Quote from the review at Adrian’s Rojak Pot:

“When I bought this Smartphone, I was absolutely clear about certain things. Personally, I am not into convergence devices like the O2 XDA II just yet. It is a nice concept but I prefer to have the two roles separated – at least for now. I don’t like having an incoming call to my PDA while I’m showing a movie clip to my friend or when I’m reading my favourite e-book. You get my point.
