BlackBerry Curve Outsells iPhone in First Quarter
Sure, sure: all the media buzz in the mobile industry might be about the Apple iPhone and how other companies are trying to respond to its popularity, but only RIM seems to be having any actual success going up against the iPhone. According to new market numbers from research firm NPD, the BlackBerry Curve 83xx models were the top-selling smartphone in the United States during the first quarter of 2009. In fact, RIM smartphones accounted for three of the top five sales positions, with the BlackBerry Storm and BlackBerry Pearl taking the third and fourth slots. The iPhone 3G was number two, while the T-Mobile G1 took fifth place.
RIM Throws Open the Doors on BlackBerry App World
It’s no secret that Apple turned the smartphone world on its head with the introduction of the iPhone, then kind of did it again nine months ago with the launch of the wildly popular iTunes App Store with the iPhone 3G and iPhone 2.0 software. Now, Apple’s competitors are finally getting into the game: Canada’s Research in Motion has officially launched BlackBerry App World, a new application store for BlackBerry devices. Initially the store is available in the U.S., UK, and Canada, but RIM plans to bring the store to other markets soon.
Dell’s Thin and Stylish Adamo Notebook Takes on the MacBook Air
Computer maker Dell has taken the wraps of its new Adamo notebook, which the company is claiming to be the world’s thinnest notebook, measuring just 0.65 inches at its thickest. It’s also the first member of the company’s new high-style Adamo by Dell brand, which Dell hopes will "disrupt people’s perceptions" of personal computing, and incidentally, horn in on Apple’s cache for offering high-style, elegantly designed computers.
"Great design needs to be timeless and evoke emotion in people", said Dell’s senior VP for consumer products Alex Gruzen, in a statement. "While a premium computing experience was assumed for Adamo, the intent was for people to see, touch, and explore Adamo and be rewarded by the select materials and craftsmanship you would expect in a fine watch."
Most Popular BlackBerry Download? MySpace.
BlackBerry users have a reputation has being boring government and enterprise types who like to use their technology to “capture details,” “enable collaboration,” “optimize operational granularity”…and, of course, grumble about using Microsoft Exchange. But it turns out many BlackBerry users have a social side, as well: Research In Motion has announced that its MySpace for BlackBerry application was downloaded more than 400,000 times during its first week of availability, which is a new all-time high for application download for both MySpace and RIM.
New BlackBerry Pearl Flips up on T-Mobile
BlackBerry’s much-anticipated Storm may still be weeks away, but a less-groundbreaking but still anticipated new BlackBerry has just cropped up at T-Mobile. The BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8820, announced last month, officially launched for T-Mobile on Monday, making it the first network to get the slim new folder.
The big news, of course, will be pricing for the device. The Flip version of the Pearl will carry the exact same price tag as its predecessor the Pearl 8120: $150 with a two-year contract. Initially, the phone will only be available in black, but a red version more suited to its consumer-centric marketing push will launch on Oct. 20.
One in Three iPhone 3G Users New to AT&T
A new report from The NPD Group finds that 30 percent of U.S. consumers who bought an iPhone 3G from June through August switched to AT&T from another wireless carrier. Of those “switchers,” nearly half came to AT&T from Verizon Wireless, with 24 percent switching from T-Mobile and 19 percent switching from Sprint.
“The launch of the lower-priced iPhone 3G was a boon to overall consumer smartphone sales,” said NPD’s director of industry analysis Ross Rubin, in a statement. “While the original iPhone also helped win customers for AT&T, the faster network speeds of the iPhone 3G has proven more appealing to customers that already had access to a 3G network.”
Verizon Debuts Pink BlackBerry Curve
One of the most iconic phones of the straitlaced business world is finally getting a splash of color. Verizon announced on Friday that it now offers the BlackBerry Curve 8330 smartphone in pink.
Although BlackBerry first broke out of its traditional black and silver color schemed with the introduction of a pink Pearl back in January, the migration of the color to other handsets seems to be move to widen their appeal to non-business users. Verizon is pushing both the pink Curve and Pearl as ideal productivity phones for college-age women.
BlackBerry 3G Phone on AT&T Faces Delay?
A report in Fortune is confirming industry scuttlebutt that Canada’s Research In Motion will be delaying the introduction of its much-anticipated 3G Blackberry phone on AT&T’s wireless network. The phone—commonly dubbed “Meteor”—was tentatively scheduled to reach buyers in June. Fortune says August is a more likely date, apparently because AT&T has concerns over call quality with the phone.
Neither company would comment on the reports.
RIM is widely known to be developing a 3G phone using HSDPA 3G mobile technology, deployed both on AT&T’s U.S. network as well widely throughout Europe. AT&T CFO Rick Lindner referred to the phone earlier this week while discussing the company’s quarterly financial results, indicating the company was “just starting” to see a 3G BlackBerry.

The new phone sports classic BlackBerry features like push email, but also touts an improved 2 megapixel camera, international roaming capabilities (thanks to GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity), and integrated 802.11b/gg Wi-Fi connectivity for speedy Internet access when within range of a Wi-Fi hotspot.
