Microsoft And Pay-Per-Use PC

Microsoft And Pay-Per-Use PC

Microsoft has a vision of the computing future, and it’s somewhat different from the current model. According to ZDNet, a patent application published on Christmas Day reveals a future where users have PCs that are free or heavily subsidized. The customer then pays for performance level, amount of usage as well as that lovely “one-time charge.”

In the abstract, the application states:

"A computer with scalable performance level components and selectable software and service options has a user interface that allows individual performance levels to be selected."

AMD Rolls Out 45nm Quad-Core Opteron CPUs

Chipmaker AMD has formally rolled out its new 45nm Quad-Core Opteron processors. Dubbed “Shanghai” and aimed at the high performance workstation and server market, the new CPUs are designed to offer advanced virtualization capabilities—so one processor can, in effect, host several systems, potentially running different operating systems—and more efficient operation: according to AMD, the new chips offer up to 35 percent more performance than previous AMD processors, while running on up to 35 percent less power. Although the chip comes almost a year after Intel shipped its 45 nm workstation and server processors, AMD is hoping to capture additional marketshare by offering a more efficient chip designed to handle virtualization more easily.

Toshiba Folds Three GPUs into One Notebook

Toshiba Folds Three GPUs into One Notebook

One graphics processer in a notebook upgrades performance significantly. Two helps improve battery life by switching between them under different loads. Three… is downright excessive. Toshiba released the very first gaming notebooks to venture into this territory on Thursday with the Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q708 and X305-Q706.

The notebooks each get a triumvirate of Nvidia GPUS: one GeForce 9400M for sipping power and two GeForce 9800M GTS GPUs for gaming performance. Like dual-GPU machines, they will switch between running on the integrated chip or the dual discrete chips, to conserve battery when the force of dual nVidia monsters isn’t needed.

ATI FirePro Cards Cater to CAD Pros

While most graphics accelerators seem to be put to work by gamers try to squeeze every ounce of performance out of their systems for fragging, many professionals have a need for performance in more serious 3D applications. Namely, computer aided design and digital content creation. To that end, AMD on Thursday announced two new of graphics cards aimed squarely at the digital workforce, the ATI FirePro V5700 and V3700.

Both cards have been tailored to the rendering needs of professionals with faster handling for shader-intensive applications and 30-bit display engines that can generate more than a billion colors. They also include Dual Link DVI outputs for connecting ultra-high-resolution monitors or dual-display setups.

Seagate Debuts Flash-Cache Notebook Drives

Seagate Debuts Flash-Cache Notebook Drives

Storage manufacture Seagate has introduced its first notebook hard drives to be equipped with a large cache of NAND flash memory. The Momentus 5400 PSD 2.5-inch hard drives feature an additional cache off 256 MB of Flash memory, and will initially be available in 80, 120, and 160 GB configurations. The Momentus 5400 PSDs should begin shipping this week at prices about 25 percent higher than traditional hard drives of equivalent capacities.

Crucial Offers 1 GB 1066 MHz DDR2 Memory

Crucial Offers 1 GB 1066 MHz DDR2 Memory

For folks who keep their PCs overclocked and running on the bleeding edge of performance (because, otherwise, these folks never win the LAN contests!), Crucial Technology is now offering 1 GB Ballistix and Ballistics Tracer 1066 MHz DDR2 memory modules.

Like previous Ballistix offerings, the PC2-85000 modules sport Enhanced Performance Profiles (EPP), which enables the module to utilize different memory settings on EPP-supported systems to respond to processor overclocking, delivering better performance. The the PC2-8500 sticks are 240-pin, 2.2V unbuffered non-ECC memory, sporting 64 128MB chips and CAS 5-5-5-15 CAS latency numbers.

Intel to Offer Solid-State Flash Drives

Intel to Offer Solid-State Flash Drives

Chipmaker Intel announced today that it plans to enter the solid-state drive market with its Z-U130 flash-based drives. Although these devices aren’t aimed at consumers—sorry, no thumb drives with “Leap Ahead” emblazoned on the side—Intel plans to offer the systems to computer manufacturers and embedded systems makers as a way to offer low-power, high-speed storage and let them achieve better performance than they would with traditional hard disk systems.

Dell Unveils New Mobile Workstations

Dell last week unveiled two new high performance laptops which are targeted towards professional workstation users and make use of Intel Core Duo processors. The new Dell Precision M90 and Dell Precision M65 have starting prices of $2,239 and $1,849 respectively and are available now.

The Precision M90 and Precision M65, said Dell, sport a range of features designed to satisfy the needs of engineers, artists, developers and other like minded professionals. The M90’s feature set, depending upon configuration, can include up to 512MB of Nvidia Quadro FX OpenGL graphics, up to 4GB DDR2 memory, a 17” display with up to WUXGA (1920 x 1200) resolution and DVI/SVGA video outputs.

Sony PS3 Expected to Outperform Xbox 360

“The Playstation 3 will deliver nearly 2 teraflops overall performance, said Ken Kutaragi, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, at a presentation at the E3 game conference. The performance comes from the 3.2-GHz multicore Cell processor co-designed with IBM and Toshiba and the 550-MHz RSX graphics chip developed with Nvidia Corp.

The resulting system will feature twice the floating-point performance of the Xbox 360 launched late last week. The Playstation 3 has 256-Mbytes of Rambus XDR main memory that will support three times the memory bandwidth of today’s PCs, Kutaragi added.

Dell Inspiron 9300 Laptop Review

Quote from the review:

“Where entertainment on a notebook is concerned, audio and video capabilities are two essential aspects for those pursuing such performance machines. “Multimedia Delivery” is the key point here and what best to bring this to life than a striking combination of inspiring industrial design, seamless integration of intuitive software and performance components. The class of notebooks in discussion here is none other than the absolute top of the line, seriously powerful desktop replacement notebooks. Performance wise, these expensive juggernauts are unquestionably the leader of the pack and it’s easy to see why this is so. Desktop replacements have a larger build than all the other classes of notebooks, thereby allowing them to house bigger and more powerful cooling systems. In addition to that, they are designed with better ventilation properties and are well suited to cope with the thermal dissipation of cutting edge components.
