Microsoft Profits Fall

Microsoft Profits FallThe market didn’t have massive expectations for Microsoft’s profits during the third quarter of its financial year, a period that closed on March31. But the software giant beat them, although it has declared that its profits during the period fell by 11%, to a mere $4.39 billion, down from $4.93 billion in the same period last year. Althoughsales remained steady at $14.5 billion, the company had been hit by a $1.42 billion European fine regarding competition rules, which has had an effect. In sales terms the entertainment component ofthe business – it’s Xbox side, in other words – showed a year-on-year sales increase of 68%. At the same time, reduced demand cut sales of Officeand other applications.

Microsoft has already warned that sales will be lower in the next quarter.

Europeans Go More Mobile

New figures released by Eurostat show that mobile phone subscriptions in the 27 EU states increased a staggering 14 times between 1996 and 2005. At the start of the period, the average was seven subscriptions per 100 inhabitants, but just nine years later it had increased to 96 for each 100. With 158 and 127 respectively, Luxembourg and Lithuania were top of the list, with Romania the lowest, having just 62 mobile subscriptions per 100 inhabitants.   The most interesting figures, though, show countries where people used mobile access but had no landline. There was a great divide between Western Europe and the newer EU member states to the east. Although Swedish registered non one with just a mobile and no landline, the percentage was 42% just using mobiles in the Czech Republic, 40% in Latvia, and 36% in Estonia, 48% in Lithuania and 38% in Slovakia. Throughout the EU members in 2006, 18% had mobile access but no landlines.   The overall percentage of landlines rose during the nine-year period from 43 per 100 inhabitants to 48, with the highest numbers occurring in Western Europe.

Digital Camcorder Sales Rise 12% Percent

Sales reached 2.3 million units during the same period last year. Total camcorder sales, which include standard analog and digital camcorders, have fallen by 8 percent to 3.6 million units – a trendCEA attributes to a transitionary period between the analog and digital alternatives.

DVRs and DVD recorders have experienced even more impressive growth as consumers begin to understand the time-shifting benefits of DVR technology and the advantages of digital home recording. Unit sales of DVRs are up an amazing 304 percent compared to the same time period of January through September of 2003, surpassing one million units for the first time ever. Dollar sales in 2004 have already surpassed $345 million, an increase of 233 percent compared to sales in 2003.

Netflix Clients Up 82 Percent

Online DVD renter Netflix Thursday reported an 82-percent rise in second-quarter subscribers even as it raised prices by 10% during the period which had sparked concern over possible cancellations.

The Los Gatos, California company, said subscribers totaled 2.093 million at June 30, up from 1.147 million last year and at the high end of its forecasts ranging from 1.935 million to 2.14 million.

Quarterly subscriber growth roughly matches the 84% Netflix posted in the first quarter, despite a hike in the monthly subscription fee to $21.95 from $19.95 during the period.
