Over 100,000 Download iPhone SDK

Apple has announced that more than 100,000 developers have downloaded its beta iPhone Software Development Kit during its first four days of availability. Although the iPhone has been on the market for the better part of a year, the SDK represents the first time Apple has lifted the hood on iPhone and iPod touch application development, enabling programmers to create their own native applications for the iPhone rather than building Web-based services that can be accessed via the iPhone’s integrated Safari Web browser.

Apple Revs Up Mac Pro Desktops, Xserves

In an unusual move, Apple has preempted itself at next week’s Macworld Expo in San Francisco by announcing updates to its most powerful computer offerings: the top-of-the-line Mac Pro desktop, and its rack-based Xserve servers. And for folks who appreciate raw power, the new machines do not disappoint, offering eight processor cores on two Intel Xeon 5400 series CPUs running at up to 3.2 GHz, and a new architecture designed to offer up to twice the performance of their predecessors.

Just a few weeks after refreshing its line of MacBook notebook computers, Apple has beefed up it’s MacBook Pro line of notebook computers aimed at professionals and (of course) media junkies, adding faster Core 2 Duo processors, support for up to 4 GB of RAM, and Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics to speed up animation and gaming. And the 15-inch model gains the industry’s first LED-backlit display, doing away with traditional fluorescent backlighting and the mercury it entails.

Apple claims the new systems offer up to 39 percent faster performance than the previous generation of 2.16 Ghz Intel-based MacBook Pro notebooks, and up to seven times fastr than the 1.67 GHz PowerPC G4-based notebooks the new Intel-based models replaced. The new machines also add a FireWire 800 port for connecting to high-speed peripherals, and still measure just one inch thick.

Apple Expands Recycling Efforts

In what looks to be a tie in to tomorrow’s Earth Day, Apple today announced they were expanding a computer recycling program in which they will offer free computer take-back and recycling with the purchase of a new Mac beginning in June. Also announced was that their newest iPods are now RoHS compliant in California and Europe.

The expanded recycling program, said Apple, will let consumers who buy a new Mac through the Apple Store online or Apple’s retail stores will receive free shipping and disposal of their old computer. Equipment recycled through this program is done so domestically, with no hazardous materials being shipped overseas. The extension of this program stems from a 2001 start which has seen a reported 90 percent of electronic equipment collected recycled.
