Plane Landed By Text

It’s not exactly the way you’d want to receive flight instructions when you’re in the air, but it worked: the pilot of a twin-engine small plane in Ireland was guided into land by text messages.

It came about after the plane, which was en route from Kerry to the Channel Islands last November and carrying five passengers, lost all electrical power, which included communications. With no alternative, the pilot used his cell phone to call airports in Kerry, then Cork – only to have his calls dropped.

Palm Celebrates Pilot’s Tenth Anniversary

Palm Celebrates Pilot

Time flies when you’re having fun&helips;or when you’re staring at a washed-out LCD screen trying to figure out if you need to go to an appointment or whether you’ve already missed it.

Ten years ago, Palm Inc. introduced its first Pilot handheld mobile computer, successfully launching a market for portable PDAs that most analysts thought Apple had proven wasn’t viable with the spectacularly expensive flop of its Newton Messagepad. Yet the $299 Palm Pilot took off, mostly due to the ease of use of its built-in calendaring, scheduling, and contact applications, as well as its ability to (usually) synchronize information with a host computer at the touch of a button.

iTunes: Get One ‘Conviction’ Free

Gotta admit: even a crufty old franchise like Law & Order can pull a smart marketing move once in a while. From now until its broadcast premiere on NBC March 3, the commercial-free pilot episode for the latest Law & Order spinoff series Conviction is available for free download from Apple’s iTunes Music Store. The episode can be viewed in Apple’s iTunes jukebox application and, of course, is compatible with Apple’s video-capable iPods.

The episode weighs in at just over 200 MB, so, needless to say, the downloadable-TV experience is still safely in the realm of the broadband-enabled. Two other free Conviction downloads are available: a free music video from The Gabe Dixon Bandand a three minute behind-the-scenes segment on the new drama.

Duke Rethinks iPod Project

“Only students enrolled in certain classes will get the free gadgets.

The school, which hoped the $300 players would enhance students’ learning by allowing them to record lectures, capture oral notes and play language-training recordings, spent $500,000 on the pilot project.

That covered the iPods, salary for an academic computing specialist and grants to faculty members who participated in the program.”

eBay Adds Music Downloads Category

During the pilot, only pre-approved sellers will be able to list in eBay’s Digital Downloads category. After 180 days we will evaluate the pilot and determine whether to enable other copyright ownersor resellers of downloadable media to list in eBay’s Digital Downloads category if they meet certain criteria that will ensure copyright protection, service level agreements and safety, etc.

Approved sellers in this pilot have represented to eBay that they are the rights owner or have contractual permission from the rights owner to resell the listed media. Downloads bought through eBay will take place in the secure environment of the seller. During the checkout process, the buyer may be redirected to a separate, branded and secure site to complete the transaction and to download the purchased music.
