Samsung Develops 5-Inch Plastic TFT-LCD

Samsung developed its new 5-inch TFT-LCD display by applying amorphous silicon technology to transparent plastic substrates. Considered the next-generation in flat panel displays, this technology involves the use of pliable plastic instead of rigid glass in TFT-LCD production. The plastic will not break and the external design can be freely shaped making potential applications virtually limitless.

The plastic TFT-LCD R&D project has been done in cooperation with SoftPixel Inc., a company specializing in plastic liquid crystal displays. The project has also received support from the Information Display R&D Center as part of the 21st Century Frontier R&D Program funded by the Korean Ministry of Commerce, Industry & Energy.

Fujitsu Producing Plastic Touch Panels

Fujitsu Components America, Inc., Monday announced the availability of ultra-thin, lightweight, flexible and rigid touch panels for mobile applications. The full-custom touch panels use plastic film substrates to reduce weight, improve durability and provide a wider operating temperature range than traditional film-glass touch panels.

The new touch panels are targeted at mobile devices, such as cameras, cell phones, personal digital assistants, industrial equipment, and medical electronics. They have the potential to improve the form and function of products that previously did not use an LCD, or those with LCDs but no touch interface. Because the touch panels are shatterproof, product safety is also improved.
